Appearance: Zurui's base appearance is that of a white haired male of mild muscular build. Nothing about him strikes one as unique in any way, save for the color of his hair, which may be longer or shorter, with facial hair or without, as he often changes his look. He seldom takes this appearance, however, changing clothes and faces at his fancy. Some theories have emerged to explain this behavior. Perhaps he is unhappy with the way he looks? Maybe he is scared that a certain person will recognize him. What if he's secretly a wanted criminal and the police are searching for him?! Maybe he doesn't have a real face at all. Could it be that he was in a terrible accident that scarred his face and body so terribly that none can bear to look upon his true form? Or he might just be a demon. Who knows?

History: Zurui first came into the village spotlight when he entered the Kirigakure academy. Presumed an orphan of some tragedy, the secretive child lived on his own. His daily life -what wasn't consumed in academy classes- was filled with either training or menial tasks which provided an income barely sufficient to maintain his modest lifestyle. The boy excelled in his classes; though he was unable to wield a blade to the expectations of the Blood Mist, his talent in the three primary shinobi arts propelled him to the upper end of his class. Though talented, he was never regarded as a prodigy simply due to the widespread shadow of his class' two true geniuses.

A loner by nature, Zurui had a difficult time working in concert with his teammates upon reaching Genin. Fortunately, his sensei was one that treasured raw power over teamwork. Though Zurui had none of the physical prowess of his sensei, he had a talent for at least three basic elements - a rarity in the Hidden Mist. Together, Zurui and his team completed several basic missions- only one of note- before the Chuunin Exams came around. Eager to be rid of babysitting duty for a while, Zurui's sensei entered the entire team into the exams.

Though the exams were troublesome, the team managed to move into the final rounds, where Rina and Hideki -the two prodigies of the Genin class- slaughtered the competition. At first, their strength was fortunate for Zurui; he'd been teamed with Rina up until this point. However, as the tournament style matches continued, the fights eventually came to a boiling point. Every competitor left was a genius from their own village. Zurui had been lucky to not encounter any up to that point, but he worried that the coming matches might spell his fate as a Genin forever or potentially worse: force him to expose the source of his talent.

He'd come a long way thanks to his mind and his impressive reserves -for a Genin, at least. What he was up against, he felt, would require a physical ability he did not possess. That, or he may have to unleash the full power of a Doujutsu that he'd managed to keep secret up to that point.

The young teen first confronted Hachirou, a child of the Yamanaka Clan that was oddly known for his ability in Doton. Having a known affinity for Raiton and a particularly strong mind, Zurui was able to best his opponent, though it left his lacking physical ability had left his reserves rather low. His teammate, Rina, however, managed to come out of her match in with much energy to spare, though she had managed to fell an Uchiha with swordplay superior to even the Sharingan.

Next up, Zurui faced Hideki, and his fate was practically sealed. In a stunning twist, our boy actually won, though none knew how. Hideki moved in with tremendous speed, air funneling around his rocketing body, for a swift kill with a signature thrust from his needle-like sword, but he suddenly stopped, his blade missing its mark for the very first time. The wake from his dash delivered an obstructing dusty brown cloud. When it cleared, Hideki was face down in the dirt, and an exhausted Zurui knelt beside him, lungs heaving with every labored breath.

Hideki had died, but Kirigakure saw the action as one without fault, so rather than suffer punishment, Zurui was promoted to Chuunin. He continued on many missions, both domestic and foreign, though few of any importance simply because his ability was never viewed as anything unique. Why send a young man talented in three elements and Genjutsu when you have someone with just as much talent in a unique Kekkei Genkai?

This gave the Chuunin orphan a great deal of time to wander about the village. This gave him more time to hone his unique power in training, but also caused a great deal of grief. Hideki was cousin to Rina, Zurui's former teammate. Since the Chuunin Exams, she has sought vengeance but, wary of Zurui's unknown abilities, she resorted to stalking him. She could never discern what it was that had killed Hideki; there were no wounds on the body, and Zurui had never so much as practiced any technique capable of killing without trace. Eventually, she grew weary of the idle watch and confronted him.

Kirigakure was not the sort of place to openly condone acts of murder, but neither would it punish such deeds if they were performed under certain conditions. If someone were to up and disappear, well, they would just be assumed missing and perhaps hunted until a body showed up. By then, any trace of Rina's involvement would be rotted away. All she had to do was succeed. She failed.

Several years passed by before Zurui obtained Jounin. He'd been out on one of his few foreign missions -when other, supposedly superior candidates were already tasked, and he managed a few "lucky" strikes on some cross-village coalition comprised of several Chuunin and Jounin. He'd been sent to recon the group and determine their function. Instead, he somehow killed them. Oh well.

As a Jounin, Zurui had been assigned several higher level missions, one even alongside Rina, who'd made Jounin long before he had. She still bore ill intent for him, though she doubted her own power in comparison to his. It made little sense, given her prodigious talent and his, well, not-that-special...ness. But she stayed her distance and no longer bothered him with her stalking, though he always kept watch over his back. He always had, as though he knew someone was coming for him. Something to fear, something that forced him to keep his life and abilities secret. All that one could really know about Zurui is that nobody knows much about Zurui. At first, he just seemed average, insignificant, but nobody that average or insignificant makes it as far as he did.

Personality:  As one might gather from his history, Zurui projects himself as a very average individual with a complete disinterest in sharing any details of his past. He does not drop mysterious hints or leave people to wonder about a shadowy backstory -he answers with abruption and discounts everything about himself as unworthy of even sharing.

The man comes off as calm, cold, and calculated. Emotion is a suit not strong to him, though he understands it completely and, contrary to popular belief, experiences the full spectrum. His willpower is perhaps his greatest asset and it works diligently to keep his feelings and desires in check. He is an intelligent man with determined goals and a clear path to achieving them. Nothing will stand in his way and no situation exists that cannot be worked around if not won.

This solemn determination twists his world view into something resembling a game. His goal is to win the game and everything that happens is nothing more than a level to be overcome. This alters his perception of people, as well. If life is a game, then people are the pawns within that game: mindless drones acting under programmed commands that can be predicted and exploited as his needs require.
