This is seriously miserable.

That was among the more positive thoughts that Yari Nakatomi was thinking at the present time. She stood at the training grounds leaning against a boulder and looking just as miserable as she felt, her mouth drawn into a tight frown. She was wearing a sweater and a skirt, complete with loafers and long knee high socks, all sorts of things that were totally inappropriate for training. At least she’d bothered to bring along one of her scrolls, hopefully for training some sort of jutsu. At least, that’s what she assumed they were there to do. She didn’t actually even know what it meant to be matched up with a sensei, or what she was going to be learning, but she did know it wasn’t going to be fun. Still, she had to do this. Or at least she would keep telling herself she did until she believed it somehow. Kicking a rock, she crossed her arms and looked around the training field again. Geez, when is this guy gonna get here?

"Yari Nakatomi," a voice would suddenly call up from above the boulder. He usually wasn't one for theatrics, but he deemed this more acceptable than the alternative of walking awkwardly and trying to figure out the appropriate distance to start engaging in conversation. The man was 90 years old and this issue continued to persist.

Kicking off, he'd turn and land just in front of the young genin. As he looked her over, he couldn't help but sigh as his enthused eyes took in the sight.

"What exactly did you think we were going to do today?"

Yari jumped suddenly at the presence of the man's voice calling her name. She hadn't been actively sensing anything so it came as a surprise to her that he was here. She looked up, shading her eyes from the sun, and her eyes followed him as he jumped down off the boulder. He looked her over and sigh, which caused Yari to narrow her eyes, still shielding them from the light. Who did this guy think he was? He didn't look all that strong or that great; he probably even wasn't, and the kage was just sending her on a mission with some shitty dude for shits and giggles. This is what she had to deal with. She wouldn't voice any of these opinions, but her clear disdain would show on her expression. She pulled her hand away and rolled her eyes at his question, kicking dirt and rock in front of her. "I don't know, genius, aren't you supposed to be the sensei around here? Isn't it your job to tell me what we're doing?"

Raising an eyebrow, Rivu listened to the backtalk. He had been through the academy himself, surely she would have thought to wear appropriate clothes to train... Or would she have? It had been many, many, years since he had been her age... Maybe it was to be expected? Sighing again, frustrated at such distant memories seemingly being just out of reach.

"Very well, Yari," he'd say, reaching towards the small pouch at his hip. Unzipping it, he'd pull out a standard length silver scalpel, one of a set of five he had carried for nearly seven decades. Throwing it to the air with a flick, it spun before Rivu caught the blade end in his hand. Respectfully holding the grip towards the young genin, he'd wait for her to take it. When she did, he would take a few step backwards.

"Let's see whatchu've got. Cut me."

This guy was such a weirdo. He did some fancy hand tricks and then handed her a scalpel, and asked of her a strange request: cut him. What on earth? Clearly he was way better than she was, so she wouldn't be able to cut him no matter what. Was this some kind of joke or something? She took the scalpel slowly, making a disgusted face at it in scrutiny. She examined it a few times over, her eyes flitting back and forth between the blade and the man who had handed it to her. "This is some kind of trick game right? I mean, you can't expect me to actually cut you." She would look at the scalpel a few more times, turning it over in her hands, before sighing and conceding. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes. She had to do this, put up with this, for her family. For her name. She had to make them great again; everything was resting on her and this training. So as much as she was likely to complain to her new sensei, she was going to be just as likely to do everything he asked anyway. So, with an eyeroll and a sigh, she would do his bidding.

Halfheartedly, at first, she would strike out with the scalpel, slicing across with her right. He would likely dodge that, and when he did, she would grunt and jump forward, trying to slice down onto him with the scalpel. She would continue at him in this manner, most of her slices not at their full potential but some gaining in that direction the more frustrated she got.

"No, I don't."

Taking a simple step backwards, Rivu evaded the first horizontal slash with ease. The vertical slashing lunge was also a fairly simple dodge. Her handwork is slow... and her footwork is worse... Of course, it seemed more than likely that she wasn't even giving it her all; even the slowest of the slow moved faster than this. Fortunately, as his near effortless dance persisted, she seemed to grow in want to cut her new sensei.

Not enough, however.

As another horizontal lunge came his way, he opted to not dodge backwards. Instead, he dropped his body beneath the strike, extending one leg outwards. Sweeping it across the ground, he'd kick her overextended leg right out from under her, causing her to fall onto her back.

"Are you even trying?" He'd ask, should this strike work as planned.

Yari grew increasingly frustrated as the man jumped away with seemingly impossible ease. She would try and swing harder to no avail, only almost tripping over herself with a too forceful follow through in her swings. After she had lunged at him once more, the man dropped and, before Yari even realized what had happened, kicked her in her legs and knocked her right to the ground. The girl coughed as he talked to her in that patronizing tone. She glared up at him from the dirt, dust stinging her eyes as she stood and wiped herself off. "You're an asshole," was her only response. She took the scalpel and with an angry yell and a dash jumped at her sensei, slicing down toward across his chest, and twisted into a kick herself afterward. She would go at him harder and harder this time, with greater intent to hurt than she even had before, incorporating more jumps and kicks into the attacks this time around. Though she didn't even want to try, she was feeling blinded by rage. Rage at the fact that she had to be in this stupid training ground, being insulted by this stupid man, on this stupid day on this stupid planet. Everything was against her, it seemed; she'd had no control over her whole life and now she had no control here. Well, she was going to be damned if she died trying to change that. She would go until she was exhausted or he kicked her over again, and even if that happens, Yari wouldn't pause; she would get back up and keep slicing at him.

"This world was b-" He started before she had gotten back to her feet and dashed with a vengeance towards him. He chuckled silently behind a soft grin that she might not notice with her fury. Caught somewhat off-guard, he wasn't exactly as far from the girl as he would have liked. Lifting his arms to guard, he'd meet her arms and legs with his forearms, deflecting as best as he could.

He felt, however, that her anger was giving her an increasing advantage in this bout. Satisfied with her performance, one final block would result in Rivu clasping his palm around the silver scalpel. He winced, closing his eyes as blood began to seep from his stopped fist.

"This world was built by assholes, for assholes... It is my job to prepare you for them," he would say, releasing his grip and weaving a few simple seals. A brilliant green chakra would envelope his clasped hands to close the wound.

"What did you study at the academy?" Rivu would ask, opening and closing his hands to test the healing.

Yari was jolted out of her furious assault by his simple move of grabbing the scalpel with his own hand. She watched with a shocked expression as blood trickled from his palm, listening almost intently to what he had to say. Well, he wasn't wrong there, she thought bitterly, her memories drifting to her father and older brother. Both assholes who had built something great and given in to more assholes. She let out a sigh, dropping her hand as he pulled away and did some weird chakra magic to heal his wound. He asked what she studied in the academy, and she gave a non committal shrug, kicking at the dirt. "Like, I dunno. What everyone else studied. Though, I was pretty good at doing seals... I've played around with that a bit. And I'm a sensor type." She glanced back up at her sensei briefly, wondering if that would satisfy what he wanted to know. It was making her a little angry again though that his grabbing the scalpel had been so offputting to her. Why would he just injure himself like that? Why was he so calm about this whole thing? He didn't react to her mannerisms like others did. It intrigued her to how far she could push this; maybe she could get away with acting like a princess here.

"Fair enough," he'd say, letting his arm drop in satisfaction. In truth, Fuuinjutsu was never a thing he had much experience in. The warring clans of old very rarely had shinobi worth their weight in mud. Even Ninjutsu of quality was a rare sight to behold.

"Show me what you can do with seals."

Yari twisted her face, thinking for a moment. She honestly didn't know that many fuuinjutsu, just how to seal and unseal things, and even then she wasn't too terribly sure about herself. Still, she might as well show this guy what she could do; at least it would be something. Maybe then he would stop making her slice at him and knocking her over into the dirt. She looked down and grimaced at how her clothes had gotten covered in mud and dust. Yet another pair of clothes she wouldn't be able to replace, that would be ruined and scourged forever. At least she could wear them more frequently to trainings. Taking a deep breath, Yari sat down and pulled out a scroll and a brush and quickly put something together, grabbing a nearby rock and placing it in the scroll. It vanished into that otherworldly void, wherever it may be. A moment later she placed her fingers on the seal and broke it easily, the rock coming back out into her hand.

"That's... really most of it, I think. I play around with the seals sometimes, though; I've been trying to make my own." She sounded almost embarassed about it, and she somewhat was. She really hated most of what shinobi did, as it was appalling dirty work not fit for a girl like her, but fuuinjutsu was more of an artform in her opinion. To her, it was a release to create seals. The different patterns and textures they evoked she found almost calming. But she wouldn't express these things to this guy of all people. He'd probably think she was a freak or something, or even worse, that she actually enjoyed being a stupid grunt genin.
