Crafting | The Sound of Madness; the Speed of Thought

Some things were not for the eyes of outsiders. Secret arts only known to Hua Li, the Demon Smith of Kumogakure. Crafting secrets she was, by no account, about to share with others. To that purpose she was willing to work during the night and use scriptures which hid the presence of a whole building from the eyes of the undesired; the sounds trapped in a bubble of demonic powers. By all means, it would look like the forge had died out as its owner went to rest. In reality, hard labour continued in the dead of night in pure serenity.

The forge ran hot. Steel was being melted under the watchful gaze of the Kijo who whispered dark incantations all the while. Summoning sinister powers capable of sending shivers down the spine of the uninitiated. Incantations which called forth eldritch energies and trapped them within the molten metal. Turning it blacker by the second until its colour could rival the night itself. Nevarite. Hua Li's secret steel, bearing the halmark of demonic mastery.

Turning 30 lbs of steel into 30 lbs of nevarite.

Steel sizzled like hushed whispers of madness as she poured it in the mold, continuing the incantation all the while. Waiting for it to cool sufficiently so she could start hammer it away. Her whispered murmuring a lullaby for the dark-kin. Soothing the corruption within the steel as she coerced it to embrace its new darkened state. It was not about power nor morality. It was about sacrificing purity for something new, something more. To those who lay eyes upon the magnificence of nevarite, they'd see darkness. Those who would lean in and listen to its eldritch words, they'd be shown the marvels of the mind's shadows. But only those who would come to embrace its nature would be able to attune and draw out its true power - that of sealed potential revealed to all yet hiding in the light.

Metal corrupted by madness. It hissed under the forge's fires before it was poured into several molds. Forming billets. Easy to staple. Easy to carry. Easy to Seal in a single, unassuming scroll. Blocks of black metal, they could be used at a later date for when she needed access to a ready amount of resources. She had already plans for most of these billets, but depending on the rate of the Chuunin Exams there was the possibility she'd have to continue her work back home. A thought she preferred, by all means.

As the first of the billets were formed, the molds were pushed to the side to let them cool off in peace. A first batch. Not enough for the future plans. A second row of molds were rolled forward, and the dark process of incantations and sorcery began anew as the Kijo continued her nightly work in secrecy.

The deepest night had passed in the meantime. Light was starting its slow return. A matter of hours now. Fatigue rearing its head. But the job wasn't quite done yet. Even with the second row of billets done, there was still more to be molten and chanted. 30 lbs of nevarite looked like nothing, but it carried the weight of eldritch ages and agony. Of blood, sweat and tears. Probably the worst part of the Demon Smith's planned work hours, too. Not so much for her personally, but simply because the night always seemed to crawl by at such a slow pace when she worked this illustrious metal.

Nocturnal sounds looked for repose; twilight's edge loomed as the sun continued its chase for the moon. One last push towards the end. The last batch to be made. Glistening steel seemed to rekindle its spirits at the thought of passing the night and soon embracing the day. Mere tricks of her own mind, of course, as fatigue had nestled well within the Tengu. Nothing new. The Demon Smith was used to nightly labour of this kind, having passed more than once an entire night hammering down on steel until the plate had the perfect form. Then slave away as she engraved the most intricate details of living nightmares into dead metal. Only to end the whole craft with pristine polish. This labour was nothing in comparison to that work of art. This... was merely the beginning.

The last of the billets were done when the sun peeked over the city and turned midnight black into faint tints of red, orange and yellow. Hua Li left the forge to slumber, cup of coffee in her hands as she eyed the rise of light. Finally. She could find some well-deserved rest now before she had a large commission to work on.

A new day at the forge. No common crafts today, yet the Tengu Smith would honour the acquainted man with her presence. Working in plain view of the crowd, she'd not only allow their eyes to roll out of their sockets at this unique request she had been given, but at the same time subtly flaunt how much better she exactly was than the smith nearby. Still, though the temptation was great for others to seek her out, the tease would not allow anyone else the joy of her exquisite crafts.

As time gradually passed, the body suit was gaining shape. Pieces of soft leather stitched together by a deft hand. The lower section of the suit was done, revealing comfortable looking pants. Deceptively weak at first sight, until sharp eyes became aware of the metallic weave used to reinforce the whole suit. The upper section was now in the works.

At long last, the suit was done. With the last stitch in place, Hua Li allowed her hand to stroke her work of art while her scrutinising eyes overlooked the whole body suit one more time for flaws within her own construction. The leather felt supple, looking well attached. The seams were subtle if not entirely absent to untrained eyes. The flicker of the metalweave rarely caught the eye, but was certainly felt even under her rugged crafter's hands. Good. Very good. She'd lift the whole suit up, letting it roll out as gravity pulled it down to show off its entirety. It was a rugged brown in colour; nothing a little dye couldn't fix as a last touch. All in all, the craft was a success and that was what mattered most. This 'Last Thought' was now a reality.

Now that the body suit was done, the exoskeleton was up. A full armour counting several small pieces. It'd be a challenge to get the whole puzzle of crafts to properly match each other, but such was the nature of a full plate. Even if metal wasn't the most flexible material to work with, a master smith knew what to do to make sure the whole ensemble linked in perfect harmony. The first step towards that metallic synchronicity was getting the chest plate done. Taking one last look at the crafting plans sketched in her charcoal book, Hua Li assured herself she'd get this done.

Under the guidance of her hammer, the chest piece was taking form. A solid structure following the measurements of Emiki's chest. All that to make it form fitting and efficient. It'd be of good quality, capable of taking a direct blow in dire need, but the point of the whole exoskeleton mostly served a sense of precaution. Flexibility and agility were the factors to be used alongside this kind of light armour. That in comparison with Hua Li's personal armour which served the purpose of soaking full force blows like it was nothing.

From the fires of the forge arose the first of the exoskeleton's pieces. A sleek and slender craft; the chest piece. Held by the forging tongs, she slowly turned the finalised form under her scrutinising gaze. Looking for any form of flaws in a craft she expected to be beyond perfection. When she ultimately approved of the result, she set it aside to cool down and picked up her charcoal book to figure out her next construction of the day.

There were a variety of smaller pieces the armour required to offer its full protection. The shoulders, the thighs. These could wait. Focusing on the main frame first, Hua Li decided the next piece to be forged was the waist, which would be followed by the sabatons. When those were done, her client would be capable of wearing the most basic of protections. Vital protections. Still insufficient protection in the eyes of the tengu, but she had known foolhardy patrons before who expected to have these handed already just so they could make an impression. Well. They had paid for the merchandise, so who was she to stop them from blowing up solid advice for the sake of their reputation? No one. In the end, the Demon Smith remained alive and well. Work done, coin earned. Worries not hers to carry.

The last touch had been added to the waist plate. Now that it was cooled down, she added it to the mannequin which currently wore the pieces she had already crafted. Matter of getting a good impression of how it'd look by the end of the road. Hua Li connected it neatly with the chest piece already in place, providing the mannequin one more piece of armour. Despite the masterful craft, the whole thing looked poor. A chest piece and a waist piece. A lot more work needed to be done still.

Next up were the thigh pieces. They'd connect with the waist guard, further improving upon the general looks before she could finish the first impression with a pair of solid sabatons. The whole set wouldn't be completed even with those added, but it'd be useful should her client decide to come get her request early. A sense of presence that'd leave an impression. One which could only improve when the arms got their own protective pieces added in time.

Crafting the thigh pieces wasn't the hardest part. The molds were of solid quality, making the melting together of the two half-pieces rather easy in comparison to the finer works Hua Li had to perform for the other pieces of the exoskeleton. It was mostly a matter of time and a tid bit of puzzling the two halves together.

The two halves clicked neatly together. Creating a whole. One of the thigh pieces had been finished and now Hua Li granted the mannequin the honours of wearing it. She'd click it around the wooden puppet's leg and fastened it to the chest piece in turn, neatly locking the thigh piece in place on one side. Stepping back, her sceptical gaze overlooked the whole. Then she nodded somewhat, pleased with the result in general.

The creation of the two halves went smoothly, and so the next step was taken. Combining them properly and finishing them up so they'd match the set, while making sure they connected effortlessly with the chest piece. Not the hardest work in the world but a smith had to be meticulous even in the finer things of their craft.

With the second thigh piece done, the mannequin was now back in balance. And starting to look the sort. It's naked wooden feet were still a problem to be solved but all in all one could start to see the shape this exoskeleton was growing towards. Eyeing the whole package, the kijo already imagined a variety of tricks she'd play with it even though the general look of the armour wasn't really much her thing. All the better for Emiki, as it meant the crafter wouldn't be running away with it.

At long last, the end was in sight. The boots were up, meaning that it was only a matter of short time before the basic outfit was ready to be donned. Anything beyond that was mostly a matter of 'finishing it up'. A redeeming way to say there was still plenty of work to be done if one wanted the armour to be completely finished. The shoulders, arms and hands could do with extra protection, the calves could benefit from a layer. But all these sections were not mandatory for the basic functions of the armour.
