The walk wouldn’t take long, but at the same time it took much longer than he had thought. The air wasn’t as chilly as she had expected, even with it increasingly being later in the evening. Against his skin it was fine, not even raising goosebumps. Still, the silence between them and the suspense of what she had said made it feel uncomfortably long. It was somewhere very special to her. The destination wasn’t something that he could imagine. He had no conception of what was special to her. Even the littlest things like that were a mystery to her. She was a force of nature, like some sort of unpredictable spirit that could only be appeased and never understood. Reaching the gate, as they eventually did, would bring another wave of confusion to the male. He couldn’t do anything other than submissively follow behind her, doing as she said and observing the scenery.
The hatch door would be regarded with a blank stare. While he had no ability to form expectations on where they were going, this likely wouldn’t have been in his top ten guesses. Was she leading him into the sewers? Into some bunker? His mind spun at the possibilities, but he didn’t have long to speculate. The staircase was revealed, and he would be forced to follow behind her just as he had been. The door would be shut behind him as he passed through, the instant that she asked him to. The difference in her voice was something that he immediately noticed, but the softness created a contrast that made him work even swifter than he normally would.
It was like entering a different world. Here, in this little corner set aside, was a space that Chigetsu never would have imagined was somewhere his mother would spend her time. The way that he thought of her wasn’t compatible with a revelation like this, and the picture of her inside his mind would twist and strain. Somewhere special to her? He couldn’t understand it. The scenery would be taken in wide eyed, with none of the specifics reaching him. It was set aside in his mind, shoved into a corner where he wouldn’t have to deal with it, and even as he saw this room Chigetsu would be blinded to it.
The smell though. Even as he blinded himself Chigetsu could still notice it. His nose twitched, and instinctively a scowl reached his face. If this made his clothing stink like smoke he would be more than displeased. It was an entirely un-Chigetsu sort of face and emotion to have, but to destroy the carefully crafted aesthetic that Chigetsu had set up and wore as a mask would be akin to destroying Chigetsu himself. He did have a self-preservation instinct, as pathetic as he was.
She took a seat. He took a seat. So did his mother, after she set her jacket and hat aside. Again, he couldn’t help but cringe seeing her throw it to the floor. These were the sorts of things he cared about.
“I am.” He would give the masked man, whoever he was, side eyes. Presumably a bartender, but by the way that he knew Chigetsu’s name there must have been more here. Increasingly Chigetsu felt as though he was standing in the middle of a bear trap. “But I don’t.”
