Innocence Lost

Kitsuki found herself in the dark under-theater of Tamanay Hall. The illustrious mega-concert was the center of musical art in Kirigakure and given Kit's status she had freedom of access. Once news of her role in the death of the two Mizukage became public, however, she was given exclusive access. If she wanted something, she got it. Everyone either feared or admired her, but nearly all tried to curry favor with her. Every musician she had known had reached out and offered the world to her. She could be first chair of any instrument in the Triumphant Aquatic Orchesta. Hell, they'd probably even let her conduct if she asked. That's the way things were in the Isles. Strength was respected above all else. So many ninja were violent psychopaths that when a major death like this happened, everyone knew who to get on board with and fast. Nikuyo had set the tone for Kiri and almost every Kage had followed in his footsteps.

It all felt wrong. Kitsuki didn't want their slavish obedience. She didn't want them to fear her. She did want the respect of the oh-so-haughty TAO elite but not like this. Nevertheless, she accepted their loyalty. She couldn't afford to have people questioning her decisions not when she was more or less the commander of the military. The Emperor and his inner circle had gone quiet. They wanted to see how things played out and in their silence, she was given near total control over the nation's affairs. It was a lot. She played the role well but in the aftermath of Hana and Kyoji's death, she found herself often going to the under-theater to play out the emotions that she kept bottled inside.

The under-theater of Tammany Hall was constructed so that the TAO and other high class musicians could practice in secret. This way no one could hear or steal their innovations. The aristocracy would also be surprised when the actual performance was due. In modern times, the TAO and other musicians had their own private rehearsal sets but every now and again, an old school classical musician liked to practice where his predecessors did. Kit was one such musician.

She walked over to the piano and sat down. The room had been lit with candles in preparation for her arrival but there was no one around except her and Zizz. The tiny Angel rested on her shoulder. They had spoken at length after the fight. They had talked about Zizz's homeworld, about her true purpose on Earth, and about the ally that Kit had relied on but could not fully trust. There were no more secrets between them now. Any barriers to their understanding had been broken down by the ferocity of the fight. Zizz was different. She was stronger and shone brighter. She had not totally lost her whimsical nature but there was an edge to her now. The Gedo Mazou had shaken her up pretty bad and no matter how much she tied to hide it, Kit could tell it concerned her.

Even more troubling was that despite their strengthened bond, they were still at odds on how to handle Arisu. The alien was angry with Kitsuki and the distrust that still divided them. She did not want to be viewed as evil and power-hungry. After all, who did? Arisu had been through so much and despite it all, she still fought for the side of good. By all rights, Kit should trust her with her life and yet...

Those eyes...those bars.....

Kit wasn't sure what to say to Arisu or how to handle her, but she knew they'd need to work together. The bone she had thrown her with respect to the Ryo and Exclusives was not enough. She needed to show Arisu that she trusted her but that trust came with certain expectations. It was a compromise that Zizz was not entirely happy with, but they were in this together and Kit was captain of the ship. The Angel had agreed to try to be more accommodating to the invader.

The difficulty of the interpersonal situation at hand and the political situation at large was pressing down on Kit. She was going to explode if she couldn't release it and the only way she knew how was to make music. Kitsuki began to play the piano with the vigor and intensity of a woman possessed. Katsumi had always blown off steam by working out and sparring. Kit was now stronger than her and perhaps stronger than anyone else in Kiri, but violence never really did it for her. Turning sound into art on the other hand, was pure bliss.  

Chel had taken their time traveling to Kiri, processing the events that had unfolded recently. Between the destruction of the civilian village and murder of Damien Darhk, and then the disappearance of Ryuko, the political spectrum of the world would certainly be changed by the information that Chel held.

Having been tasked by Rini to talk to Kit and Zizz, hoping that they would provide trustworthy allies in the times to come, Chel had set off to Kirigakure. Even though traveling didn't take a lot of time for the Angel, Chel had decided to take it slower for the time being than was necessary.

Upon reaching the auditorium that Kitsuki and Zizz were at, Chel listened to the music for a moment speaking to Zizz as they arrived.

Kitsuki was so enraptured by the thunderous roar of the notes that she did not even notice the additional Angel that had entered  into the room. Zizz likewise was meditating on the moment. She was focused on the music and how it helped Kitsuki heal. As the song drew to a close, Zizz sensed a familiar presence nearby and turned to see none other than Chel Ydris floating in the sky right near them. Zizz had taken on a subdued mood ever since the fight at the gates but when she saw her her sibling Angel floating in the air with that funny horn of his, she suddenly exuded nothing but joy. Zizz zipped over to Chel before he could start speaking and grabbed his hands. She played ring the round the rosy with him and forced him to dance with her in circles. Kit looked over and stared at the display in complete awe. The music had softened her mood but this was a level of happiness she couldn't even put words to. A single thought flashed through her mind and with it the image of a glorious planet. Kit sat on the piano chair and watched slack jawed as Zizz greeted Chel.

Chel would know that Zizz often got like this when she was excited. She was probably the least serious and least professional of all the Angels. The Universal Builder's juvenile behavior and astonishingly hyperactive tendencies had earned her the label as "baby Angel" although technically they were all created within micro-seconds of each other. Assuming Chel got Zizz to calm down and listen to his rather important message, the pair's reaction would be of astonishment.

Kit and Zizz shared a look. Then turned back to Chel. Kit had many questions but they could wait. The most important thing was to make sure that this wasn't some sort of trick. Rini was fond of tricks after all.

Kit cleared her throat and Zizz calmed down. She turned to face the Angel and communicated her thoughts clearly in Mende. The act was much easier now that Zizz was fully awakened. Before then, she had let her heart do the talking but now she could decipher every note and syllable of the language. She didn't want there to be any misunderstanding between them and so she used the most formal dialect she could manage.

Zizz butted in by flying in front of Chel and throwing punches like a heavyweight boxer. She then mimed the act of drawing a bow and firing it. She finished Kit's thoughts in Mende but in her excitement, she lapsed into a super-informal version of the language. One that only those born on their home planet would fully appreciate it. This dialect was heavily accented and allegedly originated from a community of chrononauts that spoke their sentences backwards and made replies to sentences that had yet to be even formed. Its translation was unappetizing to say the least.

Kitsuki wanted to know what she was up against. If these two were friends of Hana's then they would undoubtedly find out about what she had done. Kit was thankful that Chigetsu's name was not on the list of collaborators but the fact that she didn't really recognize the other two was troubling. Knowledge was half the battle. There was also the danger of how Kumo would react. Kit was hoping to sue for peace with them and if Rini could soften them up for a deal then that would be splendid. But if the more moderate Raikage had been called off-world by some magical force, that left a host of sinister characters room to take control. The biggest concern being the she-devil Shimiko Chinoike. The brutish Jashinst probably wouldn't care if Hana was dead. She would take two lives for every one lost at Moonspire. She was willing to trust Chel and by extension maybe Rini but Kumo at large was going to be a problem. If she was going to sue for peace with them then she'd need reassurance that breaking things off with Konoha would not leave them vulnerable to a sideswipe by the the Kingdom of Thunder.[/i]

Chel was interrupted before being able to speak. They didn't mind though, as Zizz was very exuberant angel, so it had been partially expected. They hadn't seen each other since they split up from the comet, so it was definitely nice to see a familiar face. However, Chel had never been the sentimental type, and when the initial buzz wore off, they were immediately attempting to interject to get to their message.

Chel was a little surprised to hear that they had already confronted Hana, who had confessed to her crimes. Not only that, but she was dead, as was another violent offender named Kyoji. This gave the angel a moment of pause as they began to recalculate a path to victory against those that had done such grievous injury to the innocents of the world.

While Chel was one of the more neutral angels, still lawful and good as all angels were, but perhaps the closest to neutrality as they focused mostly on tactics, information, and building, they were also one of the more ruthless and brutally efficient ones. Willing to wipe out enemies without an issue, Chel viewed it as entirely logical to end the lives of those that deserved it.

It was mid calculation that Chel broke off as the last bit of information was one that they figured they'd need to have expounded on. With recent events, that was just the icing on the cake for something that they didn't like in Kumogakure. The place was a massive cesspool of evil and colonizers.

Kitsuki was surprised that Rini had been chosen by an Angel. Kit got the impression that you basically had to be a total boy/girl scout to get one, although it made sense that each of the angels had their own criteria. The Ōtsutsuki had a plethora of abilities and personalities so it made sense that the Nnami had created beings that could attack from a variety of perspectives. Zizz blushed and Kit gave a confident nod when Chel praised them for their efficiency. It hadn't been Kit's number one priority but she was glad that someone as smart as Chel recognized the moral soundness of her decision. She'd rather take praise from him than the countless military sycophants who had approached her after the battle was already won. Kitsuki quietly listened as Chel began to talk about the two perpetrators. Aki was a teleporter and the possessor of the Two-Tailed Bijuu. Kit swallowed. It'd be a tough fight to be sure. He was also super-smart and utilized Genjutsu which was a major weakness for her. He also had abilities that Kitsuki didn't even recognize. ⴰⵎⵜⴻⵔⴰⵙⵓ? ⵎⴰⵏⴳⴻⴽⵢoⵓ ⵙⵀⴰⵔⵉⵏⴳⴰⵏ? She had no idea what those were and she hoped that Chel would elaborate.

The Ōtsutsuki's powers were just as concerning. Kitsuki immediately recognized the Animal summoning ability. It had been Arisu's old ability, taken from Naitome. This Ikomiki person had apparently clawed it back which led Kit to the conclusion that Mockingbird was either working with the Society, or at the very least had taken it somehow from Menza. The rest of Chel's report threw in some key pieces to a rather complicated puzzle. A puzzle she didn't even know existed until she saw the missing pieces. Kitsuki recalled running into a pair of Jashinist Jinchuriki Twins. Their names were Yui and Yua and they were the adopted children of Shimiko Chinoike. The twins and their partner had mentioned that they had fought someone who tried to kill them during the Exams. The man was described as having teleported away which Kit found odd but at the time thought nothing of. Maybe it was this Shinsui person that Ikomiki had murdered. The fact that she would do so during an event like the Chuunin Exams made it believable that she'd also take part in a terrorist attack. Unlike Akihiro, her abilities were a bit more conventional. A stronger version of summoning and wood release. She had just beaten someone with the latter in a previous fight but that didn't mean Iko might not have other tricks up her sleeve.

ⴰ ⵛoⵍoⵏⵉⵣⴻⵔ ⴰⵏⴷ ⵀⴻⵔ ⴽⵉⵏ...ⵀoⵡ ⵛⵓⵜⴻ! ⵍⴻⵜ ⵎⴻ ⴰⵜ ⴻⵎ!! Zizz said as she flew around in circles. The angel was bobbing and weaving like a boxer while the two serious "people" in the room discussed an actionable plan.

The pair were dangerous but if Kiri could make peace with Kumo and get them on board with her plan, then she was confident that an allied strike force could take the two down. There had to be a way to shut down Akihiro's teleportation ability. Once they did that and turned it into a conventional battle, sheer numbers and overwhelming force would carry the day. Unfortunately, that assumed Kumo cooperated with their plan which given Chel's report seemed unlikely.

He listed off the potential Kage that might ascend to the throne.

Seigi Chinoike. He wasn't the worst choice in the world. She hadn't recognized him at the time, but Kitsuki had fought him during the Carmine Quarantine Crisis. He was a skilled fighter and had defeated her but rather than leaving her to drown, he saved her. There was good in his heart even if his mission was evil. She had been trying to get food and medicine to the people of the Land of Seas and he had annihilated her cargo. Reading the stories about starving civilians was hard and though she was thankful for him saving her life, she couldn't help but hate him. He had fought in the naval war between Lightning and Water but had allegedly died of plague not long after assuming the title of Second Raikage. Apparently reports of his death were greatly exaggerated.

Nariko Mizushima. Kit already knew it was too good to be true. The woman had stepped down as Raikage recently, even Kitsuki knew that much. News reports suggested that while she had legalized Jashinism in Kumo, her decision to pass over Shimiko was seen as a bold rebuke of the theocratic elements in the village. Nariko was still bad in Kit's book but she had restrained Kumo from declaring war on Kiri for years and had selected a moderate as her successor. At a time like this, Kit would have gladly welcomed the lesser evil.

Shimiko Chinoike. Literally the nightmare scenario. The twins had bragged that Shimiko's temper was something to behold. The woman was so evil that Chel had designated her as a morally unacceptable choice. As bad as Seigi and Nariko were, they paled in comparison to the Honey Badger. Kit knew that if Shimiko took power then Kiri's hopes for peace would be dashed. They'd have to fight to the death and pray that they made it through the war alive, possibly without Konoha's help. Pⵍⴻⴰⵙⴻ ⴳoⴷ ⵏo

Chel was halfway through his report on Seid Ōtsutsuki when he stopped. This one was a colonizer too which made Kit's heart sink. The angel appeared to be reconsidering the situation. Kit was relieved that he shared her concerns as it meant that she wasn't being too much of a doomer. Unfortunately, it meant that her assessment of the situation was accurate and that peace between Kumo and Kiri was unlikely.

Chel reached the same opinion and delivered a solution that startled Kit. She had internalized how bad things were but was committed to changing them, so her reaction for most of the conversation was subdued. But when Chel said that the village was overrun with both Ōtsutsuki and Jashinists, she flinched. When he recommended exterminatus, she gasped. He wanted Kit's help in rescuing Rini from the situation. It made sense. With Ryuko gone and Nariko in retirement, it was probably only a matter of time before the most radical elements of Kumo took control. Once they did that, they were likely going to slaughter anyone that did not share their sick beliefs. Kit needed to get Rini out there, not just because they were sister hosts but because it was the right thing to do. The problem was that Kiri could not both annhilate the evil in Kumo and chase after the perpetrators of Moonspire. The village's strength had already been bled via the World War but now that Hana was dead and Chigetsu out of commission the chance of a two front war succeeding was nil. They had to pick a side and stick with it at least until the war was over.

Kitsuki didn't know enough about Mockingbird or Kumogakure to decide which was the lesser evil but she was willing to bet that Chel knew.

Kitsuki knew that the Angels were incredibly biased when it came to the Ōtsutsuki. The so-called colonizers had destroyed their home planet and killed so many in their quest for galactic dominance. The concern was legitimate but the stereotyping it engendered was excessive. She didn't know anything about these invaders so she was trusting Chel's neutrality. Hopefully he'd be able to think past his own bias and accurately deduce who represented the true threat.

Zizz had stopped flying around and punching things when Chel got to the part about an army of Ōtsutsuki. She was now floating in the air with her legs crossed in a thinking position. Zizz was hyperactive and childish but she was not stupid. Far from it, she was far more intelligent than your average human. Next to Chel she was average but paired against anyone else she was a formidable intellectual threat.

After their exposition, Chel took in the response. They didn't really like the idea of only being able to go after one of their enemies. That wasn't necessarily an option when given the actions taken. Regardless of their reasoning, innocent civilians were targeted, and hundreds, if not thousands were killed in an invasion that had nothing to do with the war.

Chel's plan was certainly one that relied a lot on deception, but against their opponents, it would be needed. However, it at least kept the alliance strong between Konoha and Kirigakure, which was something Kitsuki was worried about. War was a game of give and take, and often enough there were sacrifices made in order to gain any ground. With the proposed plan, it made pawns out of their enemies and minimized the danger to their own forces. One of the best ways to win a battle that was among 3 groups was to turn both to your allies and set the two upon each other. Weakening them both in the process while setting up advantageous ground for your own forces.

If they waited on the attack until Akihiro and Ikomiki were taken care of, then the truce could be upheld, and in that regard it would be staying true to their word. Luckily with Zizz and Chel, they had almost instant communication between the groups which would allow for a silent and easy confirmation that it would be time to enact the plan. Zizz should be able to figure out that much on her own. An immediate attack while they were weak from battle would be the most efficient way to advance their stake in the war and ultimately save the war effort a lot of trouble and save lives in the long run.

Black flames as hot as the sun? Kitsuki couldn't beleive what she was hearing. If Akihiro possessed such an ability on top of all of his others, then he was doubtlessly one of the strongest ninja in the world. Even if it was just him and Ikomiki then they'd have their work cut off for them. Unfortunately, that was just the tip of an iceberg. Chel proposed a bold strategy for dealing with the enemies in Kumo and Konoha. He aimed to essentially use them against each other. The plan required deception, light-speed communication, and raw power. The kind of power that hadn't been seen on the continent in a generation. Chel wanted to take out a district of Ōtsutsuki, an entire Church protected by the State, and two master assassins. He was truly pitching the impossible but Kit was no stranger to doing the impossible. When it came to either art or war, Kitsuki strived for excellence and lately her efforts had been paying off.

Zizz hadn't spoken out of turn as they both knew that they could not fully plan without accounting for Arisu's possible conflict of interest. Zizz had merely ripped off the band-aid. Kit wasn't opposed to the plan on theoretical grounds but practically it was difficult. Even assuming she could get the Princess Council to agree, she'd need to then devise a rescue operation, put together two strike teams operating simultaneously, deceive both parties as to the full scope of Kiri's activities, and successfully eliminate all targets with minimal to no casualties. There might be innocent people under the Church or Ōtsutsuki's control. Children, victims, maybe even a few that didn't deserve death or imprisonment. Each case was unique and different and though she felt righteous in killing Kyoji and Hana, it left a mark on her soul. She would not take that action again unless she was just as sure as she was then. The risk was high but the reward was the stuff Sukimori had been dreaming about for decades. A chance to eliminate evil in one fell swoop. An opportunity for the world to round the corner. A one in a lifetime gamble to free the planet from alien influence and establish a new order of peace.

It was all there for the taking but did they have the courage, skill, and luck to pull it off?

Unfortunately, they weren't able to outright agree with Chel's plan, although it made perfect sense to Chel. People always overcomplicated things with their feelings and worry. Chel found that while they made a lot of risky plans, they were often bold enough that they caught any enemy off guard. When it came to boldness, there was an advantage as people rarely expected the bold plays, and thus they had a greater chance of success than it would appear on paper. However, Chel knew that convincing Kitsuki wouldn't be possible at this moment, and that if she needed to discuss with the Princesses, that she'd do that.

Chel was then given some information that threw them for a loop. Kitsuki trusted an Otsutsuki. Not just any Otsutsuki, but one of them with the colonists weapon. The Bijuu were powerful creatures, and the ones on this earth were made out of the God Tree being split, which would weaken them a little bit, but even split they were still immensely powerful. Earth was a planet of immense energy, so their God Tree and 10 tails weapon were likely quite a deal stronger than the average God Trees other planets had been drained from.

Chel, in a rare fit of surprise and emotion rounded on Zizz. The Otsutsuki were their enemies. The Angels had been made specifically to counter the Otsutsuki and their weapons. Trusting any of them went so far away from their purpose. Chel shook their head and recomposed themselves.

Chel shrank out of view and disappeared from the room, returning back to Rini, message successfully delivered and with the beginnings of a plan.

Chel seemed to understand Kit's position with respect to the war and so didn't push the issue of the simultaneous assault. Unfortunately, they were less than pleased when Zizz told him about Arisu and Kit's tenous alliance with the girl. Chel's reaction started the angel. She flew backwards and lowered her tiny head in shame as Chel chastised her for collaborating with the enemy. Kit instinctually defended Zizz:

She doubted she would be able to convince Chel. Unlike Zizz, he was much more resolute and disciplined in his approach to human affairs. Kit wanted to ask them more questions but she figured that now might not be the best time. They had a schedule to keep to and given his reaction regarding Arisu, more questions on the colonist subject weren't likely to be welcome. He asked them to keep him updated on the developments with the Princess Council to which Kitsuki nodded.

Kit couldn't promise an all out attack on Kumo but she could promise that one day she'd get Rini out of there safely. The wheelchair bound girl was selfish but she wasn't evil otherwise Chel wouldn't waste their time with her. The other Angel then blinked out of existence leaving only Zizz and Kit in the large under-theater. The two remained silent for a long while before Kit spoke up.

"I'm sorry" she whispered.

She could sense that Chel's approval meant a lot to Zizz. She could also sense that she wanted to tell Chel that she had been fully awakened, but the Arisu revelation had soured the moment. Zizz shrugged and settled on Kit's shoulder.

Kit's heart warmed hearing that. They would be facing some truly fearsome opponents in the near future. They needed to be in sync if they wanted a prayer of beating them. The divide on how to handle these aliens was deep but ultimately, they'd come to a solution together. Kitsuki took a deep breath and exhaled a superhuman gust. All of the candles in the under-theater went out. It was time to consult with the other Princesses. Kit left the music behind and headed towards the administrative district.
