    The sun had set hours before as Sayuri walked deep into the forest, her bare feet making soft ‘crunching’ noises as her steps broke the small twigs and dead leaves that were scattered along the forest floor. She had come out to clear her head after spending time caring for Azrael. He remained still as the dead in their shared room in the cave. It had been so long since he had spoken to her that she was starting to wonder if he might actually be dead and she was merely imagining that he breathed.

    ~~~
    Before she had left that evening she had spent time caring for Azrael, as she had every day since he had fallen ill. Beyond the more obvious medical care, she took time to tell him about everything that had happened since last she had spoken with him. This was typically embellished with tales of the stories in her mind, the things that Jareth showed her. Impressive landscapes of ice and snow, dyed red with the blood of those that crossed her. Or were just unfortunate enough to be in her path. None of the things Jareth showed her were real of course, but Sayuri didn’t know that, she couldn’t tell the difference anymore. Just as it had been with the visions given to her by Azrael, the layers of madness were so many that the truth laid buried where she could no longer reach it. She made Azrael tiny ice figurines to keep him company while she was gone. A small angel that sat on a throne overlooking a battlefield strewn with the corpses of those he judged unworthy of life. She had initially put them on his bed with him, but had soon discovered that that was a terrible idea, as by the end of the day they had melted into the blankets. The cold didn’t bother her, but she couldn’t be sure it didn’t bother him, so she had begun placing them on a small side table. If he were to wake while she was gone, the first thing he would see when he turned his head was her creations. If she weren’t so involved in matters outside their cave now, she would much rather spend her days at Azrael’s side. But it seemed that she was needed elsewhere more often than not now.
    Today was not some other figure calling for her aid however. Today she had decided to spend time training. While she had vastly increased her resilience as of late, being able to withstand damage from those she intended to combat was of little use without the power to also kill them. She didn’t prefer to kill those that inspired her bloodlust, she preferred to make them suffer as slowly as possible. Though she could imagine a time when that wouldn’t be practical and the swift release of death would be more advantageous a treatment to bestow on her enemies. Her other sudden motivation was her long standing dream to create an ice castle. She finally had worked out the techniques necessary to make that dream a reality and today she would begin building her citadel. She knew that the castle she built today was likely to be functionally temporary since she was building it in the mountains of the Kirigakure Training Area, and even though she had much more authority than she ever had previously, she was still unfortunately beholden to the whims of the law and the other two princesses that ruled alongside her.
    ~~~

    The stars were just beginning to twinkle into existence as Sayuri made the long climb up the tallest mountain in the training area. The air grew thinner and colder as she climbed, her breath forming soft puffs of white as she laboured up the rocky terrain. She could hear the sounds of approaching night; crows speaking the details of their watches, the high pitched yips of foxes as they went out to hunt and the howls of wolves in the far distance. She knew she was being followed by the wolves, she had done nothing to cover her scent and it being winter meant there was little to eat. She fully understood the need to hunt and eat prey. She couldn’t blame the canines for doing what they were created to do, and in fact she welcomed it. So far up the mountain there were no people around, none for miles in fact, and she was hungry. It was all the better if her meal came straight to her. Once she had reached the precipice of the mountain she would stop and look around. She felt like she could see forever, the twinkling lights of the metropolis that was Kirigakure far off in the distance. With barely a thought she would activate her hyoton and snow would begin to fall around her, soft fluffy snowflakes that would quickly cover the terrain around her. With no one around she didn’t feel the need to speak in her mind and would carry on a conversation while she set to work.

    “I would have rathered that this be built with the corpses of my enemies as its foundation.”

    ‘I know, my Queen. Consider this a trial run. You will use today as a way to perfect the process, and when the time is right we shall create a citadel that will fill the coming ages with terror.’

    “That doesn’t sound like I get to do what I want right now though.”

    ‘You will in time, be patient my Queen. See for yourself.’

    What had once been a lonely mountaintop with a darkened sky and falling snow was quickly replaced with visions of the future Jareth wished for her to create. A stronghold of ice that glinted harshly in the moonlight. Swaths of bodies filled the halls and floors, not piled indiscriminately but rather part of the structure. The horrified looks of agony and terror frozen forever on the faces of her victims. Those that she allowed to live were shackled with chains made of ice and knelt at her feet as she sat on a frozen throne. Jareth sat beside her, his angular features alight with love and approval as he turned to her. “Without you none of this would be possible. You are the catalyst to the end of days and all you need to do is obey.” His pale hand would reach for her as he spoke, the long claws on his hand grasping onto her arm and digging in.

    As the vision faded she found that the claws were teeth, and those teeth belonged to a large wolf that had taken the opportunity to attack her as she was lost in the fantasy that Jareth had given her. It didn’t hurt, not exactly. Her nature afforded her protection from pain by transforming it to exquisite pleasure and she looked down at the wolf that was attempting to bring her to the ground and devour her. It was almost comical how hard it was trying, and how ineffectual the beast's attempts were. Not comical enough for her to not do anything about it, and with little more than a thought she would conjure a grotesque and terrifying Ice Forged Sentinel from the snow that had fallen around her. The creature stood tall and moved to the wolf, picking it up and rending it in half. A sharp cry was heard just before the light of life left the wolf’s eyes, and from around her she heard several more whimpers and defensive growls. Gesturing for the Sentinel to drop the carcass, she willed it to clear out the rest of the pack while she knelt in the snow and examined her would-be destroyer.

    The snow around the two halves of the wolf was melting rapidly as the hot blood and organs touched it and transferred their residual heat. The blood was beautiful but it was minorly irritating that it was melting the ice crystals around the body, forming two hand seals; Dog and then Boar she would direct Hyoton to form the base of what would be a small castle. The ice filled in the spot on the mountain she had designated for a ‘floor’ and swallowed up the wolf carcass with it, effectively halting the melting it was causing. She had named the technique ‘Ice Wall’, but it was just as efficient at being used to create a floor or a roof. She could hear the whimpering and whining of the remaining wolves from the pack as she cast the jutsu over and over, forming first the floor and then stairs and walls. Once she had created a small one story structure she directed the ice with her hand to create a roof. The castle held several rooms, the walls being twenty meters tall and one meter thick. Each section looked as though it was intricately carved with geometric patterns, the light from the moon and stars causing the entire thing to glitter.

    Turning back towards the still living creatures she would raise her hands and direct another stream of Hyoton chakra towards them, intending to use the ice as the medium through which she could launch other attacks. The Sentinel was trying its best, but it was slower than she would have liked, the wolves being sufficiently dextrous that they were able to avoid many of the attacks made by it. Seeing one of the wolves leaping to attack the Sentinel she would form five hand seals; Bird, Snake, Monkey, Horse, Dog. Using the existing ice from the ice wall, a black ethereal looking dragon would fly through the air and crash into the wolf, the damaged corpse flying higher still, Black Dragon Blizzard stopping the wolf before it could attack the Sentinel. Another wolf would growl and run towards her as she moved and she would form six more hand seals; Ram, Bird, Monkey, Horse, Snake, Dog. The ice from the wall would coalesce as she manipulated her chakra into a One Horned White Whale and stop the forward momentum of the charging wolf. She laughed wickedly as the growling and yelping continued, it was not as enjoyable as destroying people, but it was enough for now.

    Her attacks continued as she formed more hand seals in quick succession. Swallow Snow Storm took only the Tiger hand seal and just over two dozen small ice clusters rained down on the wolf that had been stopped by the giant whale. The tiny clusters of ice were not enough to kill the wolf, she would need something stronger than that. Tiger, Dragon, Boar, Dog. Four more hand seals were formed and she reformed some of the ice from the wall into a giant tiger that then leapt at the maimed wolf, tearing at it with ferocity as it tried to fight back. It didn’t fight for long as the massive teeth from the Tearing Dragon Fierce Tiger tore into the animal’s neck and silenced it forever. Walking up to the recently fallen wolf, Sayuri placed a hand against it and forced ice crystals into the rapidly cooling body. She was not interested in dealing with more melting ice until after she had created permanence in her castle.

    Watching the wolves attack on the mountain she knew that it would be a simple matter to kill them all in one single attack. Wolf Fang Avalanche Technique was directly suited to the current environment she was in. Rat, Hare, Dog. Three hand seals would be all it would take to create a literal avalanche of ice wolves to destroy anything in its path. As destructive and chaotic as she was however, even Sayuri didn’t see the benefit in drawing quite that much attention to herself right at that moment. Instead she would glance over at the two remaining wolves that were growling and hunched down a few meters from her Sentinel. The Sentinel had pieces missing from it and she nearly channeled more ice and chakra to form the Ice Rock Dome of Magnificent Nothingness around it, until she remembered that she could simply make a new one. With the wave of her hand she would dismiss the Sentinel and laugh at the confusion it caused the wolves as it dissipated into a flurry of snow and ice. “Now to finish this up. It has been fun, tiny puppies, but I have work to do.” Forming six more hand seals; Snake, Rat, Dragon, Monkey, Tiger and Dog, Sayuri would create two black dragons out of the ice left by the Sentinel. They swirled together and crashed into the two remaining wolves, forming a vortex of spinning ice and death. The cries of the creatures were heard only for a few moments before the only sounds that could be heard was the whipping of wind and snow and ice.

    With a sigh of satisfaction at the small massacre, Sayuri turned back to the ice castle that she had created. It wouldn’t last more than the winter if she didn’t reinforce it. Summoning another Sentinel to aid as a ladder she went around the entire structure using the Ice Age technique to grant the icy architecture permanence. The roof was what required assistance and with some effort she would climb into the arms of the Sentinel and have it lift her high enough to place her hand against the ceiling. There were no windows in any of the walls, but she had created doorways for each of the rooms and an entrance at what could be considered the ‘front’ of the building with the help of the Sentinel. Eventually she would need to figure out how to create actual doors, but for now this suited her purposes.

    ‘You have done well, my Queen. This is only the beginning. Soon you will have a mighty fortress to rival any nation.’

    As she moved through her castle she would stand outside and admire her work. It was beautiful and cold, a perfect combination. She would turn slowly and look down at the village again, a grin on her face as she considered what else she could do with her ice release. Four simple and innocuous hand seals. Dragon, Ox, Boar and Monkey. Four gestures that with enough power could halt all life on the series of islands that made up the nation of the Land of Water.  Deep Freeze could last for years, ending all commerce and trade, fishing and agriculture. It would be so easy to bend this or any nation to her will. She could start with Kirigakure and spread out across the known world. She had already raised her hand unconsciously to begin the act when she heard a sharp command in her mind.

    ‘No!’

    “Why not? It isn’t as though any of these people deserve to live.”

    ‘You are strong, my Queen. But us against the entire world would only end in tragedy at this moment. I could not bear to be without you and so I beg you to wait.’

    His answer was enough to soothe her ego, to convince her that it was worth being patient. Jareth was only partially lying. Without her he would cease to exist, and so in a way he was being sincere. Though his manipulations were always selfishly centered around gaining more power for himself and ensuring his continued survival through her broken mind. Maybe part of her knew that, but it was buried beneath everything else, just as the truth of her life and her past was.

    “For you, I will wait. We still have time, and I could not bring myself to hurt you like that.”

    ‘Thank you, my Queen. Your love knows no bounds.’

    With that she would make her back down the mountain, a trek much more tiring after the long hours of creation and destruction. She released her final Sentinel just as the sun began to rise, leaving a pile of snow and ice that created slush as the warm rays of the sun touched them. Once she reached her cave home she would rush to the shared bedroom of her and Azrael, hoping against all hope that he would have awoken in her absence. Her face fell as she saw his sleeping form and with a sad sigh she would crawl into the bed next to him. “One day I will see you wake, my Angel.” She drifted off to sleep with her mind filled with visions of the day when he would rise and share in her nightmares.
