    Otokawa Shinji Shinji

With each passing year, Otokawa Shinji seems to grow quite a bit more. Just a few years ago, he was a short, scrawny boy who looked nothing like a budding Shinobi. Now, Shinji has seen a decent growth spurt recently and while he isn’t ripped or hulking by any means, he is starting to put some lean muscle on his frame, his training and dedication finally starting to show physically.

At the age of 15, Shinji stands just slightly above most of his peers and many would use the words tall or lanky to describe him currently. His smooth, unblemished skin is rather pale, and it is quite easy to spot when he is embarrassed as he turns a bright red that is plainly visible against his skin tone.

Shinji’s hair is not long, but not short either, falling somewhere closer to what the majority would describe as “medium” length. A dark blonde mess of a mane, it tends to hang in his face as he rarely brushes or tames it at all unless the situation demands he does.

He has a thin delicate nose, and rather average lips that do not stand out in any way. His eyebrows are thin and long, usually showing doubt or confusion at a situation. Shinji’s eyes are a light, vibrant blue and the emotion they convey is quite hard to miss, most often filled with some type of poorly concealed sadness or concern.

    History:

Otokawa Shinji was born as the only child to his parents, a hard-working and generous pair who longed to have a child. After numerous years of trying, they had nearly given up hope on their dream but were quite shocked and elated when they discovered that his mother, Otokawa Suzu was carrying a child. When Shinji was born, his parents were overjoyed and committed to raising their son to be a strong, kind person and supporting whatever he decided to make of his life.

As a young child, Shinji was quite cautious and reserved, preferring to spend his time reading or enjoying nature rather than exploring or other activities. While he did not go out of his way to avoid social situations or other children, it was rather obvious he was more introverted, not skilled at making many friends easily. Shinji’s father, a dutiful but unremarkable Shinobi named Otokawa Takehiko spent a great deal of time trying to convince his young son to try and go out more and find others who he was similar to.

Takehiko constantly began to push Shinji, oftentimes despite a strong protest. Shinji began to feel as if he was disappointing his family, knowing that both of his parents had been Shinobi for Konoha and served proudly. Wanting desperately to impress both of them, he made the decision to begin the long, dangerous road to becoming a Shinobi, not even fully sure if he could do it.

Surprised by this outcome, Takehiko promised to aid Shinji as much as he possibly could and the two began to train together. Despite a quick mind and sharp instincts, it became obvious that Shinji was not the most confident young man. He nearly always found a way to discount his own abilities and his nerves often got the better of him, no matter how hard he seemed to try at the task.

When he entered the Academy, he saw how broadly his family smiled, how proud they seemed when they spoke of him and his choices. It reinforced that this was what he needed to do, despite any personal fears or apprehensions. While many of his classmates saw him as a weak, timid boy who had some talent but was far too bashful to ever utilize it, his teachers firmly believed that with enough time and work, Shinji could become a skilled asset to Konoha.

In the Academy, he showed impressive diligence and a strong work-ethic that assisted in him in laying the foundation to graduate. While he was shy, Shinji had a gentle, supportive nature which made him a valued friend once someone took the time to get to know him and allow him to fully open up. There were some concerns that he was too soft-hearted to kill and that he may have to spend his career in the backlines or giving support.

While he was greatly worried about it, Shinji managed to graduate with ease, and once again his family celebrated. The idea that maybe, just maybe, he was going to be capable enough to thrive began to take root in his mind. Shini found himself assigned to a Genin team, and while he did not initially get along with the rest of his squad, he slowly began to trust and enjoy them. When war broke out, Shinji’s team was sent forward to scout and gather information, a task that worried him greatly.

One night on a recon mission to discern the positions of Iwagakure Shinobi, Shinji’s team was ambushed by a similar party. While the two sides were fairly evenly matched, both inflicted great damage on each other. By the end of the conflict, his two fellow Genin were dead, and in order to protect his Sensei, he was forced to kill one of the enemy Genin. As he stood over the bloody body of a boy who looked even younger than himself, Shinji felt his resolve buckle. Both Jounin made the decision to retreat and recover, and Shinji found himself alone and overwhelmed.

Having watched two of his friends die, and seeing two of the enemy Genin perish, one by his own hands, Shinji wondered if he would be better off just giving up. He questioned if he was made to be a Shinobi, a question that he found answered by his father and mother. They explained that even if he did not pursue being a Shinobi, life would still be full of death and sadness. The only difference was he had a chance to help and defend his village, hopefully creating less pain and loss.

It took awhile for him to heal and make up his mind, but Shinji swore to himself that he was not going to hide while others fought for him. He would find a way to be useful and grow his strength, so that he would not have to watch his allies die and his village would prosper. Since then, Shinji has worked ardently to improve himself every day.

    Personality:

A naturally reserved young man, Shinji prefers to spend his time alone or at least with company he trusts. He is quiet, soft-spoken and shy, not really going out of his way to initiate conversation or seek someone out. He prefers to sit back and observe rather than act, waiting for others to come to him. Shinji is warm and kind, taking great care to think of how his words or actions will impact those around him, and making sure to be respectful and polite. He is quite the worrier and deep down he is rather passionate and emotional, which sometimes can cause him to lash out or act rashly.

In his heart, Shinji is an idealist who wishes for nothing but peace and hopes that everyone could live a happy, long life. He has seen that this is pretty much impossible, though he still dreams that one day, there will be less death in the world. When he gets focused and determined, his attitude changes slightly and he becomes willing to do whatever it takes to see his task finished.

Shinji believes greatly in teamwork and cooperation, though he finds it awkward to spend a lot of time around others. When he finds someone that understands him and that he can let loose around, Shinji can be quite humorous and talkative. He does his best to support his friends and allies and does not shy away from hard work if it means helping someone else out. Despite his usual smile, Shinji is prone to bouts of melancholy, isolating himself at times until he is in a better mood.

    Roleplay Sample:

It was overcast, the bright sun obscured by thick, grey blankets that seemed to stretch on and on. It was the kind of day that Shinji enjoyed in all honesty, and as he walked through the streets of Konoha, he continued to hope that it would rain soon. Dressed normally, with a black, long-sleeved shirt and plain, black pants on, Shinji moved swiftly but also made sure to take some time to admire his surroundings. He knew he had enough time to make it to his destination, a small field just on the outskirts of the village where his father would be waiting for him.

In order to become a skilled, talented Shinobi, Shinji knew he needed to work his hardest. He wasn’t some prodigy, and he had not been born into a powerful clan. He was just...Shinji. As he passed the various shops that dotted Konoha, he gazed at the resident, taking note of the Shinobi he saw. Would he someday be a Chuunin? By some miracle would he be able to call himself a Jounin someday? There were plenty of days he felt that he could not handle his responsibilities and that he was going to crumble under all of the pressure.

On those days, his parents' words would give him comfort. They had told him that it did not matter if he felt sad or worried, if he had a plan or not. All he had to do was continue to put one foot in front of the other and move forward. Even if it was slow, moving forward was always better than going back or standing still. While it was hard, he had already seen his progress and knew that if he continued to learn and grow, he might be able to reach even higher.

Approaching the vast field, Shinji could not help but smile when he saw his father, Takehiko resting against a tall tree. When the elder Otokawa made eye contact with his son, he rose from his position and met the Genin halfway. The leaves in the trees and the blades of grass blew in the wind, and Shinji was more convinced now that there would be a storm today. As his father began to explain what they would be working on this day, Shinji found himself entering a focused state, the rest of the world fading away.

When he finally seemed to snap out of the trance, he found himself breathing heavily, his chest rising and falling rapidly. His chakra reserves were running dangerously low and his body felt heavy and sore. His father stood nearby, watching his son and offering instruction and occasional advice. Before Shinji stood a training dummy that had definitely seen better days. It had been punched, kicked and burned repeatedly and Shinji knew it wasn’t done yet.

“Come on, I want to see one more good attack! When you feel like you’re about to be finished, you need to find some way to keep going! Your stamina needs to improve, so give me another solid strike!”

Nodding, Shinji drew in more air, doing his best to slow down his breathing and concentrate. It hurt, but he began to draw as much chakra as he could and expended what he felt was the last of his energy. Forming the familiar hand seals, Shinji inhaled greatly, holding it in for a brief moment before expelling it. His breath became a large, searing ball of flame that threatened to scorch anything it touched. Flying forward with decent speed, it made contact with the dummy and exploded, bathing the area in the warmth of its heat, beads of sweat rolling down Shinji’s face.

Letting out a tired sigh, Shinji struggled to maintain his footing. He watched as his father smiled approvingly and felt a weak but sincere grin grow on his face. Feeling content in what he had done for the day, Shinji plopped down on his back and stared up into the cloudy sky, laughing slightly when he felt a few drops of rain splatter against his skin.

“You did good. I know you might think I’m just saying this, but you’ve improved so much.”

Shinji closed his eyes as the rain fell against him, basking in how cool the drops felt and how refreshing it was. Each muscle in his body screamed in pain, and all he wanted to do was devour as much food as he possibly could manage, then sleep for days. Hearing his father praise him was a great reward and while it felt hard to realize at times, he was most definitely getting stronger. His body was maturing, and his physical strikes were gaining power behind them while his ability to perform different jutsu was also expanding.

His thoughts shifted to those he had watched fall, to the countless Shinobi who had given their lives so he could be laying on this grass, exhausted. Could he ever have that much strength? It made him feel so small to think about. Before long, he could no longer tell the difference between the rain that cascaded down his face, or the tears. Shinji felt the grasp of strong hands on his shoulders and without any agreement, he found himself sitting up, face to face with his father Takehiko. He struggled to find the right words, eventually settling on whatever he could get out.

    “I...I don’t feel that strong…”

“Someday you will see it, Shinji. Someday you will see what I have seen all along.”

Takehiko smiled wide and wrapped his arms around his son, bringing him close and hugging him as tight as he could possibly manage. Both of them sat there in the downpour, just two leaves floating amidst a vast ocean of strife.

You have enough exp to raise one more stat to C if you like.

    Approved.
