Never Burned, Twice Shy

The sound of shuffling seemed to echo from far away. Light pierced Suguru eyes as they fluttered open.

The smell of strong alcohol and disinfectant filled his nostrils.

In front of him, pure white, broken only by the curve of flesh.

"Booba?" Suguru whispered to himself weakly, his eyes instantly the shape.

"Ah you are awake, Mr...Suguru?" Replied the woman in surprise, whose hands were hovering over his chest, as chakra flowed in between. "Can you hear me alright, sir?"

The genin's hand tried to cup, yet a firm hand led it down back.

"It seems you are experiencing some kind chakra spasms. Quite unusual, but your system took quite a shock." The woman replied, a suspicious look clouding her face.

"What happened nurse?" Suguru asked.

"I'm the Doctor, sir." The Doctor replied matter of factly. "And it seems that someone played a rather nasty prank on you by using some kind of Genjtusu that made your chakra system think you were on fire."

"But the fireball...it was so...real." he whispered.

"I can assure you that there was no fireball sir." The Doctor looked at her notes."Bar a few scrapes from crashing through a bamboo wall and a bit of water in your lungs, you had no other injuries."

Suguru moved himself, and found that every single inch of muscle felt like it had burned raw.

"It still...hurts!" the boy pleaded in pain.

The Doctor nodded, placed her fingertips on the side of Suguru's chest and let out a jolt of chakra.

Pain seared through the man's system as he clenched his teeth, before finally, a respite from the pain.

"Seems one of your chakra points was forced open in the shock. Everything should be well now, sir. You just need a bit of rest." The Doctor beamed cheerfully. "Now, I wanted to ask you about the sea-" she began but a bell rung in the distance.

"Doctor Rin, please come to Ward Five."

"Seems I am needed elsewhere. We can have this talk later." The doctor explained. "Ring the bell should you need any assistance and a nurse or doctor will come to your side promptly."

And with that, Suguru was left alone.

Wheeling around dissection tools on a cart, Renny has had a good rest in the past few days. Compared to the past, Renny now wears more luxurious clothing. A silver coating of the Katsuyu armor is found on Renny's body, contrasting slightly with the white hospital. Fitting in here before, Renny doesn't need to blend in as a fake doctor, but not all patient records are accessible.

In the ninja world, privacy's important, and the staff wouldn't just go fully mentally scanning people. Genjutsu injuries can be the hardest ones to solve, and this is the main reason why Renny expects for his companion to still be hanging around. Constantly at Renny's side, a Shadow Clone, through having done the hand seal a few rooms back. Rounding hospital corners, Renny's clone engages itself with the Calm Mind jutsu. Coming across Suguru's room, and seeing him inside, a fluid turn of the cart brings the duo inside Suguru's room.

"Hello again. You've helped with my research. I'm here to teach you Shadow Clone Technique. If I recruit for matters past that, you must be clearly willing," said Renny. Placing the cart at Suguru's bedside, Renny then stretched past it. Carrying his items like alcohol in coat pockets, Renny doesn't intend to share that. Beginning the hand seals on his walk into the room, Renny smiles beneath a mask, which might make it hard for Suguru to recognize Renny.

Instead of sharing drink, Renny spoke his words from behind Suguru's side, and placed a hand toward Suguru. If the hand comes to touch Suguru, Renny will initiate the Lampbulb jutsu, and this can bring relief to Suguru's mental pains. Having Military Ration Pills and a more B-rank resume, Renny isn't as skittish as before. Without any outward sign, Renny intakes the pills with his Injection enhancement. To ensure Suguru doesn't back off like last time, Renny has a second Katsuyu armor wrapped around the wrist of the hand. On contact, Renny makes his cloak stick to Suguru.

Groans of the wounded, moans of the hurt and snores of the sleeping were all that was left to keep Suguru company.

The genin slowly prompted himself upwards, layering cushions behind his back. Each movement was still painful, his body only saved from agony by spots where he was numb. It seemed the resetting of his chakra system had done quite a number on him, but at least he had a very pretty doctor to look after him.

Suguru smiled at his good fortune for landing such a medical profession. Maybe next time, his "chakra spasms" might actually be enough to actually grab something.

Alas, his good humour was ruined by the fact that he remembered why he was here. Some strange man had decided to play some game with him. All he knew about him was the name of 'Renny', which quite possibly was false. His allegiance or motivations as to why he did what he did eluded Suguru. The only certain fact was that this man was a master of Genjutsu, as he had experienced such powers first hand.

"Hey, you there?" Suguru whispered to himself.

His mind was silent.

Suguru sighed, pain flaring across his chest as he did so.

"You can play your games all you want, but we need some way to stop Genjutsu or else we are both toast if that bozo shows up again."

If the voice had any ideas or anything to add would be something Suguru would not know for the time being, as someone parted the curtains around his bed and rolled in a cart filled with medical implements.

"Sorry mate...but I ain't rung..-" Suguru began, yet this figure cut him off with words of his own.

"Hey, your voice...sounds-"

Cloth wrapped around his wrist and fingers, its steely grasp stopping the genin from forming a hand seal, stopping his attempt at a katon jutsu before it could begin.

"Really, you came back...just teach me that Jutsu?" Suguru croaked. The boy tried to sound confident, yet his sweat and staggered speech betrayed his fear.

"Yes, I'm here to teach you. I'm a neutral ninja, gathering people to help a worldly cause. All my actions so far can be understood as helping you. I increased your mental abilities, so you can control your chakra and self better. It's a shame someone's genjutsu hurt you. If you kept touching me like now, you can see genjutsu affects you less," Renny explained to dispel some mystery. Without mentioning Kumogakure, Renny doesn't want to put a opposing village's ninja like Suguru on-guard.

Waving his unsticky hand to his clone, the clone of Renny peeks through the curtain for Suguru to see it. Then, it goes to guard the door stoically, after peering at Renny's nails and the surgical cart. "In return for learning to clone, you'll have to humor me a bit. You were only hit with a C-rank genjutsu, aren't you in need of help still? Your dual persona doesn't work for even the most minor things.

"I can teach you to make a Shadow Clone, at least it might help with genjutsu. You'll split your evil side to it, I'm sure you have experience in duality, and most people can handle making one clone at least," pressured Renny. Renny retracts his Lampbulb jutsu for now, after giving a metaphorical carrot. There's no need for Suguru's intellect to be increased for the following thoughts off what Renny says. To facilitate things, Renny's clone also dispels behind the curtain.

"I want a kidney in exchange. I assure you there's little difference to having only one. Isn't it a good deal? I teach you to fully clone, and you only lose part of yourself you don't need. If you miss the kidney, I'll find a better one to replace it," Renny persuaded, with somewhat childish comparisons that a fool might buy. An unstated factor is the bloodline curse, and Renny's dead eyes go to meet Suguru's without flinching.

"Here, have some anesthetic," Renny lied. The Injection enchantment is used for the anesthetic purpose, by trying to use the armor touching Suguru, and to place poison in Suguru. If Suguru agreed to losing his kidney, Renny proceeds to surgery, clawing at Suguru horrifically. The poison might make Suguru completely still due to his stats, but it'd keep him wide awake. If needed, Renny supplements the operation with the cart's surgical tools. Well, the only anesthetic Renny had is to use poison beforehand, which can force Suguru to remain maddeningly still. If everything worked out, Renny leaves the kidney on a tray of the cart.

"Now we can begin training," said Renny after surgery. Luckily Suguru's sturdy enough, so there couldn't be that much pain if it happened, and Suguru's in so much mental suffering already there's little greater pain to be had by surgery. Having deactivated Lampbulb, Suguru likely won't notice much flaws in Renny's procedure. As an investment, Renny didn't cause any undue damage to Suguru, and ijutsu was used to remove any sign of damage. Grimacing, Renny didn't appreciate having to spend unneeded chakra on more healing than usually necessary for such a minor procedure.

"please not another genjutsu, please not another genjutsu, please not another-"

Suguru's mind raced as he waited for the man's response, the seconds of silence seeming hours in his fearful state.

"Neutral Ninja? If you think that teaching me...will make me abandon my village..." His voice trailed off.

"I only serve the Hokage and...nobody else. If you think that you can turn me against my village, you are...dead wrong, Renny." For the first time, despite the pain and fear, Suguru's voice sounded confident.

He was scared shitless of another Genjutsu, but he had been waiting his whole life for this. Some smuck thinking he could flip him against the village, only for Suguru to show his loyalty. The ultimate cool guy moment.

Yet once Renny proposed the deal; a kidney for the knowledge of the clone jutsu, Suguru found himself no longer a cool shinobi, but a wavering and fearful boy.

"M-my kidney? You want...my kidney? What the fuck?"

One on hand, learning this jutsu would elevate him to new levels of coolness and enhance the success of his...recreational actives. On the other hand, it would cost a kidney.

The boy's pupils turned ochre, his iris narrowing into a cat-like shape.

Unfortunately for Suguru, it seemed that his fear and uncertainty had opened the door long enough for it to take the reins and make a decision for him.

"A kidney? The fool has lost far more than that, and I brought him back just the same." It was still Suguru's voice yet it carried cold malice with every word spoken that made it clear who was speaking.

"Consider it a deal, yet if you break your word..." It's hand fleshed as it pulsed with unnatural musculature, before returning back to normal.

Suguru's muscles found themselves rigid as Renny opened his stomach up and took his price. The genin could not even scream in pain as his muscles were frozen stiff, yet his natural hardiness proved handy at keeping him concious throughout the whole ordeal but that also meant he felt every cut and incision that was done on his flesh.

As the poisons wore off, Suguru let out a long beastly hiss before getting to his feet.

"Before we begin, let me just go borrow a kidney."

As it spoke, a tendril of chitin starting forming out of its hand, while it slowly sneaked its way towards the patient that lay behind the next curtain.

Listening to Suguru reaffirming his loyalty, Renny didn't intercede. That's the funny part, Renny just finds Suguru's loyalty a challenge. A side quest doesn't need to be taken at the moment. What's Konoha's loyalty to Suguru if Renny stole intelligence from Suguru's mind? It's not betrayal to have the foreigner's tasty soup.

Suguru is acting so distant, Renny already feels closer than Sugu's own parents. Studying the Nature Clan body during the operation, it can be observed Renny's seen every corner of Suguru's being. Originally, Renny planned to force the boy to transform, but the examinations are most complete now with the alter-ego's submission.

Consent for the mentally ill is a touchy subject. As a great believer of the human spirit, Renny's going to think that the insane-side is more Suguru than the other one. The problem starts to become that this other-Suguru wants to become more whole again by eating someone. It's a shame about the poison not working, they're as expensive as being rewarded for S-class missions.

"There won't be any need for that, I've already healed you to full. Still hungry? I'll go fetch us some food," said Renny sinisterly. Pulling back at maximum speed, Renny's wrist-cloak tries to drag Suguru along with it. Aiming to wrap Suguru in the cloak, the tendril will be bundled as well before it harms someone. Unfurling the cloak from his wrist, it seemed a part of Renny's clothing, but it's a separate item entirely.

While the cloak brings Suguru closer to Renny, Renny also moves back past the surgical cart, and no hospital residents are alarmed yet. The anticipation that poison might not work was already a given. Bagging up Suguru in an adhesive on all sides is also a way to immobilize Suguru, and this is what Renny aims to do now. At worst, the poison served as a distraction during surgery; it'd have been much more horrible if Suguru chose to be bound to an adhesive matt.

"Watch him," Renny sighed. Placing an exposed leg on to Suguru's hopeful bodybag, to free Renny's hand, and the leg keeps Suguru paralyzed. Forming the hand seal brought forth another Shadow Clone, and then that Shadow Clone kept in contact with the cloak that went to adhere all around Suguru.

Beginning with short steps, Renny then runs out of the hospital without looking hasty. There's no school rule, like a shinobi can't rush in the halls. The only near-future worry Renny has is that the split personality will be transferred to someone. While Renny's gone, his clone starts to teach Suguru the Shadow Clone Technique, even if Suguru can barely move a muscle and could only stare.

It had hoped that Renny would be more receptive to such...indulges.

"Healed me fully? You think your flashy jutsu compare to what I can do?" It let out a joyless laugh as it turned towards him, an attempt at a laugh from someone who had seen it done, but never understood the concept behind it.

"Though I wouldn't mind picking your brain for an idea or two." It licked it's teeth as it spoke, the tongue seemingly growing longer with each word. "Food for thought."

Alas, Renny decided it was best to play some more tricks on Suguru.

The shionobi's cloak flew around the genin's body to restrain him, bundling him up in one package as a shadow clone popped into existance.

Yet this time, having observed this manner of attack in action, Suguru's hand elongated past the bindings of the cloth and reached onto Renny's shoulder, pressing down in it's steely grip.

"WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING?" The voice boomed, devoid of any humanity.

Before Renny had the time to answer, the curtains around the bed split open and a very annoyed nurse appeared.

"Sirs, this is a hospital, not a place for tomfoolery and rough housing. If you don't need medical attention, please leave or I will have you escorted out." She chided. "There are training grounds less than a minute away if you want to show off your shinobi prowess, not in a darn hospital." The nurse added with finality, giving a deadly glare to the two before leaving.

"Ummm...so about that shadow clone jutsu..." a voice came from the cloaked bundle. It sounded like Suguru once more and his eyes confirmed that whatever had overtaken him was no longer in the reins. "I am no sensei...but I don't think this is really how you teach it..."

Observing the twitchy alter-ego at the time, Renny didn't need to think about eating brains. There's techniques to be a serial brain-eater, and Renny's world knowledge lets him know that people really do take food for thoughts.

While Suguru's alter-ego learned an interesting technique, Renny's guard didn't go down. Opting not to mentally invest too much, Renny's rewarded in that one hand isn't strong enough to keep Renny from staying in the room. The method was a good idea, since the cloak only has so much room to fit things. The brute is lucky the cloak Renny's wearing doesn't contain more malicious compounds.

Not taking the nurse's words to heart, Renny's excuse will just be he's giving mental counseling. With the credentials and knowledge, it'd be hard for any doctor in the hospital to argue against Renny. It's a simple and calm walk back to Suguru's room. On return, Renny brushes his shoulder off, and in his pockets he carries some items bought.

"Of course, I'll keep my promise. Your current state's to protect you more than anything. Although, the limb extension was admittedly out of my expectations. Because of your extended limb, it's not as if you can't perform the technique where you are. What? Do you think stretches will let you clone yourself?" Renny joked. The food was forgotten, but if the Suguru that was promised food has left then Renny has no promise to uphold. Keeping himself busy, the medical ninja walks over to the cart with the kidney. Bringing the kidney next to an examination device, there's some aspects of the Nature Clan biology that Renny looks at to pass his musings.

"Focus on dividing your chakra, like you would a technique, but in a more even-split. Feel a similar feeling to your split mind. The main purpose of Shadow Clone Technique is to learn information, and the technique's foundation is memory. With the technique, you can impart basic items along with the clone," Renny said. The hesitation in Renny's words were minor, as this technique is known to many people. More focused on his research, Renny just gives his advice unfiltered and based off his experiences with Shadow Clone Technique. The major or minor wonder is if Renny's way to learn things could help Suguru enough.

"Any questions? Or you can tell me about yourself. If not, my final recommendation and idea is that you ask your village to learn Multi-Shadow Clone Technique. Starting with a stronger goal can bring you closer to the minor one," Renny remarked. Turning away from his device, Renny brought the kidney and cart out of Suguru's sight, to storage the findings. Remaining in the room, Renny performed the Living Tissue Preservation Technique with it's hand seals, and then put the stored organ in a coat pocket. Unlike last time, Renny's blood used from scratching himself isn't healed, and the doctor just lets it scab over. Returning to Suguru, Renny looks at him in wait.

Although Suguru was unsure how he had gotten wrapped up in this predicament, even the dense genin had enough brainpower to guess what happened.

What was strange was that he did not remember anything. Whenever he had found himself in the backseat of his own mind, he was at least given the power to watch and experience what his own body was doing.

Yet all Suguru could recall was him reaffirming his loyalty to Konoha, before Renny decided he wanted a kidney in exchange for teaching him the clone jutsu. He remembers fearfully deliberating, before...he woke up tied in a cloak, a few feet away from his own hospital bed with a clone of Renny spouting out instructions.

Was this some side-effect from one of the many concoctions or jutsu of Renny? Or was the voice becoming so strong it could remove even his power to know what he did? Or maybe, was it the loss of his kidney that triggered this?

The what and why would have to wait, as Renny returned and the cloak unfurled him from his grasp.

"Limb extension?" Suguru asked. His arm did feel kind of funny as if his bones were semi-liquid. He shook it side to side as he listened to Renny explain how to perform the jutsu.

From what he was being told, this jutsu sounded pretty difficult, but he couldn't give up. The power of this jutsu was too strong.

Suguru closed his eyes and tried to shut away all the pain, focusing only on himself.

Using an old trick thought to academy students, he pictured his own chakra system as he started to exert his tenketsu. He imagined the chakra moving, slowly rippling from his chest and into his hand.

It took a couple of tries, as it kept fizzling out, but after a minute, he found himself holding an imaginary ball of chakra.

It was at this point he realized he had no idea what hand seals were needed for this jutsu.

"Ummm...what seal do you use?"

"Good question. The Tiger or Clone seal can be used. The most important thing I can teach you is to think of memory for this technique," replied Renny. Having released Suguru, Renny also dispels his clone. Demonstrating a final time, Renny does the 2 hand seals he mentioned. No clone appears.

"Shadow Clone Technique also is a way to accept you can't do all things yourself, ironically. Maybe when you think on it today you'll get it all," said Renny. Tapping his own head, Renny hopes Suguru will understand the lesson enough. A lesson doesn't need to be gotten initially or repeated. In Renny's opinion, harsh memories will always bring an earlier lesson to fruition if it's meant to be.

"We'll meet again," Renny noted, repeating words from the 1st encounter. Backing into the hallway, Renny then raced away, in case Suguru asked questions.

"Tiger and Clone seal, hmmm...yes. I know those." Suguru replied, trying to sound confident in his lie.

The genin had never heard of a clone seal, and he could barely remember the names of the hand seals, let alone which one corresponded to which.

Either through luck or Renny figuring out that a shinobi of Suguru's caliber needed physical demonstration, he illustrated the hand seals in question.

"Oh, the hands together, fingers up seal. I know that." Suguru replied with a nod of his head, happy that despite its complexity, this jutsu only required a single, simple handseal.

Having lost focus, he once more closed his eyes and focused on the imaginary image of his own chakra system.

His heart bubbled with chakra, and he guided it slowly, but surely, into his hand, before he flexed the finger of both of his hands into the right seal.

The moment the tips of his fingers touched and his thumb bent upwards, Suguru felt his being explode as chakra ripped out of him.

As he opened his eyes, he found himself looking at himself.

Both of them reached their hands out, before slapping their hands in a high five.

"Holy shit this is cool!" exclaimed Suguru.

"Holy shit this is cool!" Suguru exclaimed.

He was so fascinated by himself that Renny's lesson flew over his head, and only his parting words reached the genin's eyes.

"Hey, wait a second!" Suguru shouted.

"Hey, wait a second!" Shouted Suguru.

Yet Renny had slithered off, and Suguru found himself by himself.

With Suguru besides himself with joy of learning a new, powerful jutsu, the two marched off the hospital, looking to make trouble, and make it double.
