    Twins! We said twins! ILZ7uy7

“This clinic has been a godsend in so many ways…”, Zaylee thought to herself as she glanced around the building that was currently empty of people. The clinic of her father’s had always been one of his pride and joys. He had fronted the money for it out of his own pocket, wanting a place that wouldn’t turn people away regardless of their social status or income. It certainly didn’t bring in much income, but it was a reality no one bothered with because the truth of the matter was her father was paid in other ways, such as gratitude and love of those who would have otherwise had no place to turn to for help. The place had been built before she and her twin had been born, but through the stories that her family and others had told, her father had helped in more than just funding the place: his own blood, sweat, and tears had gone into the building’s construction, the bringing in of various medical equipment, the set up, and the nightly clean up when it was ready to close up shop.

Growing up, she and her twin had spent a lot of time split between their mother’s kimono shop and their father’s clinic. Each building had been given a special place for the twins when they were babies and toddlers, and then as they aged further they had begun to learn at their parents side: picking up on both the clinics responsibilities as well as those of the kimono shop. It had long ago made Zaylee realize that she idolized her parents due to their compassion, hard work, and willingness to see things through - she wanted to be just like them. Of course, she didn’t have her father’s knack for medical ninjutsu, in fact it seemed that her skills lay elsewhere despite her father’s various attempts at training her twin and herself. Yet, the older male had taken it all with a grain of salt, like he did with everything in his children’s lives, so long as they were happy in their pursuits that was all he and their mother cared about.

Zaylee still tried to help out though, even if it was doing precisely what she had this evening: cleaning up the clinic after it had closed while their father got to head home and get some much needed rest and relaxation while their mother prepared dinner. She wasn’t a fool though, if someone needed her father they knew well how to get into contact with him, and he would have these people either meet him at the clinic, or he would make a home visit if they couldn’t. It was the norm of their lives, and they all loved him dearly for it.

Putting the mop bucket to the side and glancing at the clock which showed it was nearing seven, Zaylee grabbed her keys from the receptionists counter and headed to the front door. Turning off the lights, she stepped outside, ensuring to lock the door good and tight behind herself before heading down the road towards home. Her stomach was growling, but even still her footsteps were careful - the snow that had fallen throughout the day had done a good job in coating the ice which had formed the day before, but a wrong step would certainly put her flat on her ass. She was not  interested in falling while wearing her kimono, the looks she was getting because she was walking around in a knee length kimono in this kind of weather was just enough - she didn’t need to add to the spectacle by flashing her panties at someone and making a fool out of herself. At least her attire could be explained away - with the Yuki bloodline strong within her, the cold didn’t bother her as it would others, and the cold never made anyone sick - that was a misconception.

The trip home was one she had made a million times before, and it never took long. Her father had chosen the clinics location specifically so he was never far away, so even with her careful steps it took her less than five minutes to reach the front porch of her family home. As expected the steps had been salted, keeping the wood from becoming slick and allowing her to step up them safely. Crossing the porch, she entered inside, the difference between the frigid cold exterior and warm interior of home causing her to pause for a moment as if she had been punched in the chest. Adjusting quickly, and not wanting to let more cold than she already had inside, she closed the door behind herself and slipped her shoes off, putting them to the side to dry.

“That you, Zaylee?”, her mother called out from the kitchen, the delicious smell of good food wafting out to meet her sensitive and slightly rosey nose.

“Yeah, mom. I just finished cleaning up and locking up the clinic. Dad not here?”, she responded, walking towards the kitchen and through the doorway. Sure enough, as she had expected, her mother had been cooking up a storm, and the kitchen was the source of all the excess but still comfortable heat within the house. Fireplaces were wonderful, but there was nothing like the heat created from a love of cooking and making sure your family was well fed.

“He just stepped out for a moment to check on a patient of his. They had come in with an infection, and even though he gave them antibiotics, he wanted to make sure they were getting over it nicely. He didn’t want them to travel and risk catching something else, so he’s just popping by their house real quick. Promised he’d be home by the time I’m done cooking. Do you mind setting the table?”, Marici spoke.

Grabbing some plates out of the cabinet, Zaylee spoke again as she began setting the table, “Where’s Mamoru?"

Sitting in the backyard, wearing only a black pair of hakama pants, was Mamoru. Even though it was snowing, the chilling temperatures did not affect the half-naked male. Eyes closed, he focused on moving his internal chakra throughout his body, using the energy to provide just enough heat to keep him from feeling the bite of the winter snow. A Yuki he was, thus having immunity to cold temperatures, he still found purpose in the aforementioned exercise as it gave him another chakra control exercise. Soon afterward, he opened his eyes, revealing cyan blue orbs, and looked towards the direction of his Daremo’s owned hospital, “It is time.”

Emerging out of the house, wearing a blue and white kimono with a dragon motif, Mamoru began making a familiar walk towards the hospital that his father owned. Although he hasn’t shown any aptitude towards the medical arts, he still enjoyed spending time at the workplace. The knowledge gained from being around others who practice medical art was invaluable to the young man and his development as a shinobi. Furthermore, it was always fascinating to see the different types of injuries and alignment that comes in during the day. Nevertheless, he was not going there for the aforementioned reasons, instead, he was there to pick up his twin; Zaylee.

Okay, ‘pick up’ is the right word to describe what he was during as he watched his twin leave the establishment. Knowing his sister enjoyed her independence, Mamoru followed behind her. Keeping a good enough distance from them to avoid suspicion by his other half. Though, he does wonder if she knew that he essentially follows her home whenever he can. He is doing so to make sure nothing happens to his younger sister. In short, Mamoru was being his normal overprotective self.

With the house in view, Mamoru took a way back to the house, slipping in the backdoor after patiently waiting outside for some time, to give the impression that he was still outside training. The sweet aroma of their mom’s cooking greeted him as he walked into the living room, and made his way into the kitchen. Immediately spotting Zaylee, who was getting plates, and their Mother putting the final touches onto food. “I’m right here.”, he spoke as he helped Zaylee set the table, “I was outback mediating.” His words only be a half-truth, “How was your day, Zaylee?”, he inquired.

    Twins! We said twins! ILZ7uy7

She was being followed: she could feel eyes upon her, hear the subtle movements of someone a distance behind herself. Yet, instead of this instilling fear upon the teenager, it actually brought about a feeling of safety. She knew well by now who it was: her twin, elder brother by all of two minutes, Mamoru. This wasn’t the first time she had found herself shadowed by her twin as she walked home in the evening hours after cleaning and locking up the clinic, and she had a feeling her brother had no intentions of stopping. This had been going on for years, ever since the pair had graduated from the Academy together. While perhaps some would have considered it an invasion of their privacy, a lack of trust, or had assumed that the other person was playing bodyguard because they perceived the individual they were following as weak, Zaylee knew this wasn’t the case when it came to Mamoru. He had always been protective over her, even over-protective as some would have called it. They had a bond that went deeper than normal siblings, likely due to the fact that they were twins. It was a protectiveness that had gone back to when they were young babies, when Zaylee would scream for hours in her own crib, refusing to be soothed or to settle, until her brother was in the room with her, and while it had changed somewhat throughout the years, that bond of protector and protectee had lasted.

So, when she inquired as to where Mamoru was as she began setting the table, she knew it wouldn’t be long until he was inside the house, likely with some excuse as to having been elsewhere, busy, instead of following her: in this case he had been out in their backyard, mediating. “My day was fine. The clinic was slow, so I basically sat at the reception desk and drew. Dad’s new receptionist did another no-call, no-show today. I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t fired her, yet.”

The answer why was provided by Marici, who despite owning her own kimono making shop was still well aware of everything about the clinic, including their staff, “That’s because it isn’t her fault. Her boyfriend has been being very controlling and preventing her from going in. He comes from an old school family, and believes she should be home taking care of the house instead of out making a living for herself.” Pausing in her stirring, Marici pointed to the overhead cabinet nearby, “Mamoru, be a dear and grab some glasses and cutlery. Dinner will be done in a moment, and your father should be home soon so we can eat.”

This news about the receptionists boyfriend caused Zaylee to frown: out of the many reasons that could have been given for the woman’s lack of showing up, that hadn’t been what she was expecting to hear. It reminded her a lot of the mentality of the wealthy and nobility within the village, and the roles they assigned the genders within their little makeshift world. It was also a staunch reminder of how very different her own family was, despite being just as well-off as the rest. “Maybe someone should head over there and have a talk with him, and explain the errors of his ways and thinking.”, Zaylee would speak after a moment. It wasn’t like her to go straight for the violent solution, she was very diplomatic. However, while talking to the guy would have certainly been her preferred method of handling this, she knew that people like the man being described certainly didn’t change that easily - words could only do so much. Of course, that didn’t mean she was unwilling to try, but in her gut she knew it would take more than just words to persuade him to allow the receptionist to come to work without the constant influence of her boyfriend.

As if something had just randomly occurred to her, Zaylee turned to face her mother after having placed the last plate at the kitchen table. “Wait, if they’re so old school… are you saying they’re living together even though they’re not married?”

Marici of course had a smile on her face, a knowing one as she placed a mat down on the table and began carrying the various pots and pans full of food over to be placed down. “No, they’re not living together. However, their marriage has been a long-standing prearranged one. The girl’s father is allowing the boyfriend to have a say in what she can and cannot do despite her still living at home.”

“So then it’s more than just the boyfriend whose causing issues for dad’s receptionist.”, Zaylee deduced, glancing over as her mother nodded in agreement.

Rather Zaylee believed the words or not was little concern to him. He already concluded that both of them were onto each other shenanigans and was just playing along for the sake of it. Nodding at the words spoken, his thoughts drifted to his father’s receptionist. From the times he had met the woman, she had been kind and fun to hang around. She joked and found ways to get underneath his skin, either through teasing or making an inappropriate comment at a sudden moment when no one was around to hear it. She kept updated with his activities, and seem to actively listen whenever he talks about things. “Did you draw anything interesting?”, he inquired.

Heeding his mother’s words, Mamoru walked over to the cabinet, grabbing a couple of glasses and cutlery, and placed them on the table. A frown marred his features as he thought about the receptionist’s situation - something mirrored by his twin. He could not wrap his head around the ideology of a woman should be home, taking care of the house, instead of making a living for herself. It dumbfounded him on how people could have a line of thinking. What would happen if the husband, or money provider, get hurt? What then? There would no income flowing into the house. The ideology was different from what he and his twin grew up in.

Zaylee’s words brought a look of surprise on Mamoru’s face that quickly morphed into a small chuckle, “If did not know you as well as I do, I would assume your words meant someone needed to kick the man’s ass.”, he spoke, knowing well his twin was more of a diplomat than himself, thus, her words did not have a hidden meaning. “Unfortunately, talking to him would do more harm than good. If he is this controlling already, having someone talk to him about his errors, could make it worse for her. He could tighten the proverbial leash around her neck.” From reading, he knew men like that did not stop their ways so easily. It took more than words to change them,

Helping his mother bring the pots over, even though she said ‘she got it’, Mamoru listened to the words spoken. “Seems like the father also has the same ideology. I would not be surprised if he treats his own wife the same way their daughter is being treated.”, he spoke. “He actually treats her worse, Mamoru.”, the words were spoken by Daremo, who had just walked into the kiss, “Let’s just say he goes beyond the verbal abuse.” Nothing else was needed to be said for it was obvious what the man was hinting at.

“Yeah, I worked on a pretty large drawing. I’ll show you after dinner.”
, Zaylee responded with a grin: there was one thing to certainly get her spirits up, and that was sharing her art with her supportive family.

Unfortunately, she knew Mamoru’s words to be the truth. Certain people could be spoken to, you could explain yourself, your situation, and the issues with the problems you were having, and they were amenable to change their ways and lifestyle. Then there were people like the man being discussed: those types of controlling, abusive people did not change. You couldn’t talk sense into them, you could not bargain with them, you couldn’t hope to change their viewpoints. She didn’t like the idea of someone heading over there and talking to the man with their fists instead of words, but she also knew that the female, her father’s receptionist, needed saving. If one of them didn’t step in then who honestly would? Yes, she hated this situation, but she was intelligent enough to know it needed to happen. “I hate violence, but you’re right. He’s not going to listen if someone goes over there and simply tries to talk to him.” In her mind Zaylee added “Especially not a female like myself” but she didn’t bother speaking the words aloud.

As Mamoru helped with the pots from the stove, Zaylee ensured that everything else was on the table that needed to be before she headed over to the fridge and grabbed a pitcher of juice and brought it over, beginning to fill glasses. As Mamoru questioned how the receptionists father was with his own wife, and her father came in, it became clear that this abusive situation was much bigger than they originally thought. While their father didn’t spell out the details, he gave enough of an answer for them to formulate their own thoughts and opinions about it.

After pouring juice for everyone, Zaylee seated herself down in her usual spot at the table, waiting as the food was dished out on various plates and so forth, with plenty left over for seconds or even thirds depending on how hungry everyone was. Picking up her utensils, Zaylee ate quietly, her mind churning over the various thoughts within it. Her dislike for violence and need to talk things out was warring with the side of her that knew logically the receptionist needed saving and words weren’t going to be the knight in shining armour in this situation. In the end, Zaylee settled on just removing herself from the situation: it wasn’t like anyone would expect her to personally handle either the father or the boyfriend, so it was best to be just pushed out of her mind. Yet, it remained as a small reminder of just how ugly the world was, and made her glad for the way their parents had prepared them for all of this.

Wanting to change the subject, or at least shed some light on something else, Zaylee turned her focus to her father after she finished chewing and swallowing a bite of food. “How is your patient doing? I think I remember her, the one with that nasty infection that came in a week ago?”

“I will be looking forward to that.”,  Mamoru responds to his twin’s comment on showing off her artwork after dinner. Although not an artist himself,  he had grown to appreciate the artworks, thanks to no small part to his twin’s love for it. He even tagged along with her to some of t,he art shows, or showcases, that happened in the Land of Water. Now that e thought about, an art show was supposed to be happening tomorrow. He made a mental note to talk to Zaylee regarding it, and see if she was interested in going. He doubted she would say no to the proposal.

Her words were not surprising to him. He knew his twin was opposed to violence - the opposite of him. Between the two, she was more of a diplomat, using her words to solve the problem. While he was the type to allow his fist do the talking for him. Not to say he could not be a diplomat if needed, he just preferred using violence, when necessary, to get a point across; he was truly their mother’s child in that regard. Not bothering to say anything else regarding her statement, Mamoru helped set the table, just as their father walked in, and added onto the conversation.

Thanking Zaylee for the juice, Mamoru’s face twisted into something ugly, “That man is truly despicable.”, he spoke. Their father did not need to come out and say what the man had been doing - his hint was enough for everyone to understand. “Never should a man hit a woman.”, of course, the exception to the rule was in a life and death situation, such as their occupation, but otherwise, Mamoru was a big supporter of non-violence against women. Knowing he could not get involved, Mamoru calmed down slightly and looked toward his father when Zaylee inquires about a patient.

“She will make it. Currently, have her taking an antibiotic for the infection. She is working with another health professional, a colleague of mine, to deal with her unhealthy lifestyle. “ Daremo spoke between bites of food. Looking between his two children, he spoke once more, “Now that you two are genins. What are your plans going forward? Will you two be seeking guidance from a jounin instructor, or will you rely on other means to gain the power you seek.”, his eyes looked over to Zaylee and then Mamoru, “Did either of you have any ideas on what you want to specialize in?”
