Oda had taken to monitoring the bridge with a couple of guards coming and going. This was by far the easiest way into the village as the chasm kept most from being able to cross. Given the freezing conditions and wild life out there it was hard for even a shinobi to move unseen. Of course there were others patrolling the land. This was simply where he felt it was the most effective point for him to be. He still hoped that where wouldn't be anyone aggressively approaching via this bridge. A larger force would need this to bring supplies in. Still his white eyes would scan the snow capped edge of the other side of the chasm. How long could they keep this place safe? The two guards there were hardly up to par if anyone with some skill came through. Oda himself may only prolong someones progress if he had to get involved. Still he would do what he could to help keep his people safe. Even if it meant destroying the bridge. He had that level of determination. People didn't deserve to suffer. No conquering army would be allowed passage. He would fight back if he had to.

The two samurai there at either side of the bridge were rubbing their hands together and keeping warm as best they could. Wearing thick furs to keep from getting frostbite. The temperatures up here were easily well above freezing. A small tent to the side of the road had been set up with furs around a circle and a fire burning in a circle of stones in the center. It was there for them to retreat to for warmth but in full view of the bridge. They were only out now because it was better to show a presence than to hide within the tent. Oda on the other hand was standing above on a cliff about four meters up. He could see better from up there. Unlike them though he didn't seem disturbed by the cold. Even the ground around him was clear of snow entirely. Like it had all melted away. He stood there poised with white eyes watching like they might pierce the souls of those crossing. His arms crossed over his chest and an old Odachi on his back. He was wearing a black high collar uniform with brass buttons and a long white overcoat with his clan symbol on the back. On his feet were well worn boots of a farmer. However across his chest, forearms and shins were ebony armor plates. His white hair shifted in the breeze. Wild around his head except for the red sideburns that appeared almost like flames.

    (Land of Earth)

"You and Amaya will hold down the fort while Chen and I am away, the journey to the land of Iron will take time but if the rumors are true then we must go."
Masaru spoke fast as he walked towards the gates Hansuke following quickly in tow, he had already sent word for Chen to meet him at the gate and over the last month his protege has yet to let the man down. "Surely an emissary would be more appropriate, as Kage your place is here with your people. Not travelling to a foreign country where you could be killed because of a rumor." Hansuke stated in his normal objection to the man's decision to leave the village, Masaru would glare at the man without slowing his pace for the gates. "We are talking about the Shogun, that may not mean much to you but it means something to me. Sending an emissary to him would insult him as much as it would for someone to do such to me, a leader deserves a leader when it comes to negotiating a possible alliance." The man's tone held a sternness, Masaru felt strongly about things such as Diplomacy. It was why he spoke personally with the Hokage rather than sending someone else, he will show the Shogun the same respect as he would expect the same respect paid to him. Hansuke would go to object once more only to be cut off by Masaru, "Enough Hansuke, need I remind you of your place. You are an advisor, your advice is noted. I do not need an advisor to tell me what I need to do, I know what I need to do. I Have Spoken." Masaru's words were harsh and the absolution in his tone was apparent. Hansuke would stop walking causing Masaru to stop as well, realizing how harsh his words truly were to his former sensei. "Forgive me Hansuke, but I am not your student any longer. I must do this, but I know you are concerned. That is why Chen is coming with me, the boy has made a lot of progress over the last month. He is more than capable of being my shadow, we will be safe." Masaru stated placing his hand on the old man's shoulder as he spoke, Masaru was not naive. He knew this trip was a gamble, but one he was willing to take if it meant gaining an ally. The news of the Shogun's rise in power among the samurai of the land of Iron was surprising news for the man, but a potential ally so close was had to ignore for him which was why he wanted to depart as soon as the news came to him.

Once all three were at the gates, Hansuke would look to Chen. "Bring him home, and watch his back." The old man stated before heading back to the administration office, his concern for Masaru was not only that of his Kage but that of his child. Having raised Masaru after his parents death, it was understandable. Which was why situations like this were so argumentative between the two, the reversal of roles was still strange between the pair. Masaru would look to Chen, "Let's go." As they left out from the gates Masaru would begin to explain why they were leaving and where they were going in more details than the note supplied, which was 'Meet me at the Gate, ready to Go.' The man explained the fact that he had heard rumors of the rise of the Shogun and they were going to speak with him, as well as the reason why they were doing this as he had explained to Hansuke.

    (Land of Iron)

The cold air was a big change from the moderate temperature of the Land of Earth, however cold did not really bother the man. His inner heat capable of keeping him warm, he held concern for his protege, even if the boy did not complain about the cold. He did not hold the molten core the man held within him, however he had made sure they both had proper warm clothing before their departure so Chen should be fine. As they neared the Samurai bridge, Masaru would see the small campfire on the other side of the chasm and three men standing on the other side. "Well Chen it seems we are about to meet the Shogun's welcoming committee, let's be respectful while we are in their land shall we." The man stated as he began to walk towards the entrance to the bridge to cross the chasm, they were merely two travellers no real threat to the men. Though while they were there in an attempt for Diplomacy, if the guards decided they wanted to be aggressive then Masaru would return it in kind.

    (Land of Earth)

Chen stood outside the village gates waiting for his sensei to arrive. The boy was dressed in all black as was custom. He kept his hair slicked back ensuring that it wouldn't be in his eyes and that anyone meeting him would think him a respectable second in command as opposed to a scared orphan from another world. He had a backpack filled with all of his essentials. He had been training and studying hard under the Tsuchikage's tutelage. He doubted he'd be able to kill any higher ranked Samurai but if it came to blows he promised he'd be an asset rather than a liability. When Masaru joined him at the gates, he brought that old man in tow.

Hansuke asked Chen to watch over his sensei. The Ōtsutsuki merely stared at Hansuke in response. He only broke the blank stare when Masaru told him it was time to depart. He gave his Kage a respectful nod and turned to follow.

    (Land of Iron)

Chen had never been to this part of the world before and it showed. Even with all of the furs and protective clothing provided to him, Chen found himself shivering. The Land of Iron might as well have been the Land of Frost or the Land of Snow. It was beyond freezing and if it wasn't for the Tsuchikage's training his teeth would be chattering. Fortunately, his pain tolerance had grown since he had left the desert of Sunagakure no Sato. This enabled him to bear the cold without vocal complaint. He occasionally used his Fire Release to warm his hands but beyond that he did his best to tough it out.

Masaru alerted him to the fact that they were about to meet some Samurai. They'd need to be respectful if they wanted to gain peaceful entrance into the Shogunate. Chen nodded and gave a "Yes Sensei". He wasn't the especially chatty type. In another life he was damn near mute. So the fact that he was even speaking in full sentences was a display of remarkable progress. Chen wasn't sure why visiting this Shogun was so important. Yes, the rise of a new power in the Land of Iron was noteworthy, but as far as Chen was concerned the Samurai were a nation of weaklings. The Land of Earth and the Land of Wind were practically rump states and yet the could crush Iron at any time of their choosing. The idea that they needed to pay homage to some sword wielding dingus was laughable. If Chen had a sense of humor, he'd smile at the prospect.

Instead, he kept his mouth shut and face neutral. He was here to observe not comment nor jester.

Post by Oda Mon Jun 15, 2020 1:52 pm

Oda himself did not appear to be older than perhaps fifteen or sixteen. Though those that had grown to know him knew better. He was in his thirties. For his clan he was still considered a child at that age but it had already passed the mantle to him to lead the clan. He represented the Hinode in everything he did now and in turn he had sworn loyalty to the shogun. So his actions here might as well speak for him as well to newcomers. The issue was border excursions had become a common place occurrence. Resources were scarce in cold climates like this. His own clan had been paranoid of others before but now, now he wondered if perhaps the whole country would feel the same. He had tried to repair that broken spirit. His own people drawn to a light they had thought they needed to fear up until this point. Mankind would not thrive divided. For divided they fought for their own gain instead of a mutual one. He wished to see a better world than that. One he would make with his own hands if he had to. Someone had to set the example and if it had to be him so be it.

Still his white eyes would pick up two lone profiles approaching in the distance at his level he wouldn't be able to tell much but he could still see them from his vantage point approaching the bridge. He would frown before looking down to the two guards. It appeared they were yet to notice. Still Oda would shift and begin walking down the path from the cliff above. Snow seeming to part before him like a road forming as the heat from his body melted it away. His union with katon so intense it would not be contained. However he did not push his power outwards from himself intentionally so all it was to others would be pleasantly warm. By the time the two were halfway across the bridge the two guards would stiffen visibly. Once they reached this side the two guards would block the path. Hands on hilts as they crouched ready to draw. "Halt! State your business!" One would bark out harshly. The other watching the two and ready for a fight. Oda would approach from behind and shake his head wearily. This was no way to keep the peace.

Oda would step up between the guards and rest a hand on each of their shoulders. Oda held no station over them but the two looked at him as he turned and made eye contact with each of them and they nodded before straightening. Hands still resting on hilts but more relaxed. No words were spoken but it was clear they trusted this man. Who appeared as if he was a boy next to each of them. Yet those white eyes shifted to look between each of them and there was wisdom there. No hate or suspicion. Just calm calculations. When he spoke it sounded formal. His hands crossing in front of himself. "Welcome to the land of Iron. Perhaps you are unaware but there has been some disturbances along our border and we are naturally wary of outsiders at this time. I am lord of the Hinode clan, Hinode Oda. I would like to welcome you to join me by the fire for some tea. Perhaps you will be willing to share with me your names and purpose here once you have warmed up?" The invitation to the fire seemed almost silly considering that standing within ten meters of him made it feel like summer on the bridge.

Masaru would see the guards stiffen as they drew closer across the bridge, yet they made no move to stop the pairs approach until they made it across the bridge entirely. As two of the guards moved and Masaru would see their hands go for their sword, the Male's left hand would fall to the hilt of Devorakos. Masaru made no move except for his hand resting casually on the hilt of his blade, ready to respond if the Samurai tried to attack. The third guard would step between the two men, placing his hand on their shoulder. The two men would relax yet their hand still rested upon their weapon, Masaru's hand would remain upon Devorakos as well. The man could almost hear the Blood Bringer begging to be unsheathed to feast upon the blood of the Samurai, however he was not here to kill them. If he wanted to do that they wouldn't have even seen his approach, he was there for peace but he would defend his life and his pupils if needed.

The third guard would introduce himself as Oda Hinode, as well as offer Masaru and Chen some Tea by the fire. Though Masaru had no need for the fire, the offer of tea is always one that was hard for the man to ignore. The man would then inquired about their names and purpose in the land, in a far more welcoming and respectful manner than the first two had. "As a matter of fact I would love some tea." Masaru replied with a nod following the man to the campfire, as he did his thoughts drifted to what Amaya would say if she were here. Sprouting off titles for Masaru, half of which the girl made up herself but would take a good ten minutes to recite. Instead the man decided to keep it simple, once by the campfire and a cup of tea in his hand Masaru would finally introduce himself. "I am Sandaime Tsuchikage Masaru Tatsudashi, ruler of the land to which this bridge connects. I seek an audience with the Iron Shogun Kensai, in regards to our closer borders as it were." Masaru's tone would be calm and respectful, but at the same time would carry the sense of self importance that one would expect from a leader of a nation. Masaru would purposefully not introduce Chen and has never been one to share his intentions with others, even his young pupil did not know the full extent as to why they were here. It was not that Masaru did not trust Chen with the entire reason they were there, it was more that it did not concern the boy so there would be no need in telling him. Despite having moved to the campfire, Masaru remained standing with his left hand resting on the hilt of Devorakos. Taking a drink of the tea after a quick smell to ensure there were no poison in the tea, convinced that it was safe. Though he would give the appearance of calm and relaxed his eyes were carefully watching the three Samurai for any sign of fowl play.

They were held up in the middle of the bridge by Iron's Welcoming Committee. Chen glared at the Samurai with vicious hate. He then relaxed his face upon remembering what his Master had said. They were to treat these sword-wielding barbarians kindly. That meant Chen couldn't so much as scowl at them. He was internally pissed that they were holding up their progress in one of the coldest regions in the known world. One of the men stepped forward and identified himself as Oda Hinode. Chen wasn't familiar with the Clan but that wasn't surprising. The Land of Iron did not produce shinobi whose abilities were world renown. In a way, that was a good thing. It meant that their abilities were hidden and secret as opposed to common knowledge. He proceeded to offer them tea and a warm fire. Chen's esteem of the man instantly shot up and he hoped his Master would accept the invitation. Mercifully, Masaru took him up on the offer and the group would soon find themselves around the campfire.

Masaru had declined to introduce him and while he found that rather annoying, he did not complain. He said nothing. If Oda wanted to know his name then he'd repeat himself and ask directly at which point Chen would look at Masaru for permission to tell him. Chen hated being a servile puppy. It ached every part of his bones to pretend to be so meek. But he had been promised power and so far Masaru had made good on it. He had been given Iwagakure's Exclusive Ninjutsu or at least those ones that he could learn. It was a taste of things to come and it was enough for Chen to continue playing the part of dutiful student. Chen sipped his tea gratefully as he took in the surroundings. His sensei had a hand on his weapon and everyone seemed tense. He kept his eyes on this Oda for as long as his body would allow.

If the Hinode paid any attention to him, he'd notice that the boy didn't seem to be blinking.

Oda would smile welcomingly though it didn't seem to meet his cold eyes. Always calculating but he was formal. He would bow his head slightly and lead them next to the warm fire before collecting the hot kettle. Though it may appear odd to them as he collected it right off the fire with his bare hand without so much as a cloth for protection. Yet the young man did not seem to mind. He collected three cups and gently poured jasmine tea into each cup before setting the kettle back over the fire. High enough above it to keep it warm but not to burn the tea. Steam rose off each cup as Oda would find a seat within the teepee on a small pile of furs. His own Odachi being removed from his back and settled behind him as he grew comfortable. He would sip his tea first to show he was not using any tricks or ill intentions. It was not the samurai way to trick someone with poisons. Or at least it was not something Oda would knowingly allow. He would sip his tea with a content smile as he listened to the leader of the two. The other remaining quiet.

As the man would introduce himself there would be a frown on the lips of the young looking hinode across from him. Those pearl white eyes would shift to look to one of the two samurai standing close enough to hear. A soft nod and the man was off. Running in the direction of the village. It was unclear though the purpose of this. Were there to be reinforcments? Was knowledge of this simply being delivered to Kensai? What would this runner be doing? Oda did not seem to seek to enlighten either of his guests with this but instead watched to see how either would react. These were dangerous times and either of them sought to strike down a simple messenger than peace was not the intention of their talks. Still introductions had been partially made and Oda would shift his glance back to the other young man who had a permanent frown on his features and seemed to stare an awful lot. Almost a puppet with how still he was. Oda would speak calmly once more as the remaining guard outside did not seek to interfere. Assuming the messenger was allowed to leave peacefully of course.

"I must say this is an honor than. Though it troubles me to be left to wonder your intentions. I pray that you merely seek perhaps trade or an alliance but you must realize how difficult these times are. You see the mountains are scarce when it comes to resources and surrounding territories seek to profit from ours. Usually forcefully. I hope your country is different but I would find myself foolish to not consider the possibility. I can tell you right now my Shogun is not one to submit to the rule of another either. He seeks a unified country under his banner but he can't manage that if he is viewed as a pawn you see. However I am rushing ahead of myself. Young sir I never got your name. I would like to know what you may have me call you?"

Post by Masaru Fri Jun 19, 2020 6:23 pm

Masaru would just watch as one of the Samurai would leave shortly after his statement of wishing to speak to Kensai, he had no reason to stop the man and cause an international incident, anymore than it would serve them to kill himself or Chen.

"Don't look at me boy, you have a tongue. The man asked you a question, are you going to be disrespectful and not answer him." Masaru stated in his typical condescending tone, a tone that he often used when the boy did something foolish during training. It was as if the man was asking the boy if he had a brain, and could think for himself. Masaru wasn't a bad person, nor a bad teacher, he was merely unconventional in his approach to how he trained the boy. He wanted nothing more than to see Chen become the strong warrior he knew the boy was, but that would not come from coddling him or holding his hand in a strange land. The boy was smart, he had proven that by how quickly he had been progressing. It was one of the reasons Masaru brought the boy along with him, not to be his bodyguard, not to watch as two leaders of nations talked. Whether Chen believed it or not the man valued his opinion, if during the discussion with the Shogun the boy heard something he felt uncomfortable about or felt would look bad for Iwa, the man expected the boy to speak up. So the boy speaking freely to this samurai would be important, Masaru told Chen to be respectful not weak but at the same time he knew Chen did not speak much still the knowledge of him allowed to speak freely may provide some insight. Chen represented Iwa just as much as Masaru did and to show any weakness would show weakness within Iwa, and that was something that Masaru would not allow.

Once Chen had introduced himself or said whatever it is that he was going to say, Masaru would answer some of the man's concern. "While I would prefer to speak to the Shogun personally as to why I am here, however I will tell you I have no need for your resource nor do I have any desire to have the Shogun submit to me. If either were the case you can rest assure that you and I would not be having this conversation nor would it just be myself and my protege. If I wanted to conquer you, you and your fellow samurai would already be dead or on your knee pledging your loyalty as you kissed my boots. However, rather than a conversation through blood. I would prefer one with words, the land of Iron has nothing to fear from the land of Earth so long as myself and my protege return unharmed. I have a high respect for the Shogun, and that is the only reason I came here today." Masaru's tone the entire time would be calm and respectful, even with his comment about if he had want to conquer them they would be was said non-aggressively. It was not a threat it was a simple statement of the truth, at least in the man's eyes.

Chen noticed a man running off while they had tea. He guessed that the man was some kind of messenger but he was annoyed that Oda wouldn't confirm that. It wasn't his place to complain though. Oda was flattered by the Tsuchikage's presence which only served to irritate the orphan. The Hinoide before him was practically gushing in support of this stranger. Even Chen had been pretty chill when he first met Masaru. Chen lowered his tea and continued to stare at the Iron lackey. He said that they welcomed trade and friednship but they would not be bullied by the Major Nations. Chen could understand where they were coming from. It seemed Lightning, Wind, Earth, Water, and Fire were always gobbling up smaller nations. Their fears of conquest were well-founded.

Oda suddenly asked Chen what his name was. He looked to Masaru for permission and he was chastized for not speaking up. He was used to being spoken to when in situations like these. For a child like him, talking out of turn could lead to severe punishment.

    "Chen. Chen Kimyōnakama"

He beleived that he was being obedient and submissive by seeing his leave to talk freely, but apparently it only made him look stupid. To Chen it seemed like you couldn't please adults no matter what you did. If you talked back you got smacked, if you refused to talk without permission you were mocked. It was a constant lose-lose situation. Chen began to grind his teeth to keep from hyperventilating in rage. The grinding continued and was raised to an audible level as he stared daggers into the Hinode for even putting him in this situation.

The boy's tension alleviated when he heard Masaru threaten the man by implication. He said if he wanted to, he could take the place by force. Chen quickly raised the tea to his mouth to keep from smirking. He drank the burning hot tea deeply and though it blistered his mouth it kept him from expressing a smug satisfaction in hearing his Sensei's threats.

Oda would listen as the young man was encouraged to introduce himself and did so. Though the glare left in the introductions wake did not go unnoticed. He would glance with white eyes into the burning red of the young man. He felt he could sense a tension there. As if he wished to do harm. Yet his attention was brought back to the older man. This Kage who spoke simply of forcing them to submit if he so chose. Speaking as if it would be such an easy task. It would cause a raised eye brow from Oda but it would not create an angry reaction. It was not stated as a threat but the fact that the man was so sure of it did perturb Oda. He would finish his tea calmly as he glanced into the empty cup. He needed to check his words before he spoke again. If he did challenge this man he might find a fight they would wish to avoid. Not that he thought they would lose so easily but simply because it would stretch them out on more fronts. He would set his cup down and fold his hands in his lap.

Oda was a practiced gentleman. His education was perhaps not as formal as other larger nations but he did have one. His white eyes studied the two in silence a moment. He was being careful and choosing his words. Not out of fear but out of duty. The Samurai outside was too far away to be of concern here with his anger. Of course he would take such words as an attack to his pride. However pride rarely did much for a nation. Instead the corners of Odas lip would turn up slightly. As if he knew something the two before him did not. He would take in a deep breath as if too calm himself and check his tone before speaking once more. His voice colder perhaps but still calm.

"Well we should consider ourselves fortunate than that such a mighty nation doesn't wish to conquer us. Though war, war is not a new concept to us. There is a devil behind every door around us. I think you may find that the Samurai are not so meek. I don't doubt your power of course. However I would offer a simple idea. You see, Often we find that sparring between ourselves deepens and understanding of another. One can never truly understand someone as well as when they have fought each other or side by side. When all words are set aside and only our hands carry our intentions. Now a lowly warrior such as myself would be of no contest to a Kage such as yourself. Not like my Shogun would be. However if the young master Chen is willing, I would happily demonstrate some of the power of our village to you both. If he would spar with me. I will not draw my sword though. Such a thing must only be done when I am prepared to kill my enemy."

Post by Masaru Tue Jun 23, 2020 5:54 pm

Masaru would smirk at the man's words of not drawing his blade unless he intended to kill the boy, if the man only knew that was exactly how Masaru had been training the boy he might have chose different words. Every morning Masaru met the boy in the training field, and would put the boy through such treacherous training that his life was constantly on the line. That was just another day in Iwagakure, only the strong can survive there under Masaru's rule. The man weeded out the criminals, and was showing his people the strength within him. When he heard of the Shogun doing something similar he knew that the man held a character befitting of an ally, he didn't care about what the man had or could do for him. Masaru needed people he could trust, and Kensai from all reports was a trustworthy and Honorable man and that was what Masaru was looking for in his allies. He had once thought Konoha was strong, but the child leader there proved he thought wrong. He was there to see for himself if the man would be a powerful ally or not, seeing one of the Shogun's subordinates in a spar would give him some insight into the man himself.

Masaru would look over to Chen at Oda's question, if the boy looked to him for permission again Masaru would be giving a look that said 'it's your life, it's your choice'. While Masaru was Chen's Sensei, he was not the boy's master. Chen was the one at the wheel of his destiny, that had always been the case since the day Masaru too him as a student. He chose his path then and he would chose his path now. While Masaru would have liked to see the boy fight someone other than him, he would also be representing Iwagakure as well as Masaru's own training. Masaru had faith that the boy could easily beat the man even if he was using his sword, however he would not force him too and would respect his decision either way. If Chen denied the spar, Masaru would make the comment. "Our journey has been a long one, perhaps another time would be more suitable." However, if Chen did accept the man's challenge to a spar Masaru would give Oda a word of warning. "If you are not prepared to kill him, you will not win. In Iwagakure death is at your doorstep everyday, and Chen has faced death for the past thirty-five days. While it is your choice to not draw your blade, I do not think it would be wise to go into this with an arm tied behind your back. You should have all of your skill available to you." Masaru knew the possibility of a contest of skill would happen on this journey, although he had hoped it would of been him verses the Shogun he would have to make due with watching Chen.

Chen was rather disappointed in Oda's response to Masaru's threat. He had expected the man to either cower in fear or jump up in rage. Neither of those things happened and so the alien found himself growing bored of this charade. He did his best to put up a front of control but Chen was not so easily misled. The Tsuchikage held all the cards here and all the rhetoric in the world wouldn't change that fact. It appeared the Hinode had something else in mind though. He began to talk of sparring and how it deepened one's understanding of their adversary. Chen didn't nod but he agreed with the man's line of reasoning. He wasn't following where he was going with it though. It wasn't until Oda mentioned not being strong enough to challenge Masaru. Chen instantly knew where the man's intentions lie.

If he could not humiliate the Kage, then he'd try to humiliate his student. By showing his superiority over Chen, he could claim a victory without risking war. It was a cowardly strategy but Chen hid his disgust, instead preferring to sip his tea calmly. The boy's eyes remained glued to the Samurai as if trying to bore a hole into his head. He said he would not draw his sword and Chen was rather offended by that. Just how weak did he think Chen was? Did he mistake the boy's silence for meekness? Chen set the tea down and blinked exactly once in response.

Chen had learned to mind his temper in front of others. An off-color look or remark to the wrong person could lead to severe punishment. He had mastered control over his facial expressions and thus by looking at his face you'd only surmise that he was conscious nothing else. Not anger, not joy, not sorrow. He didn't expect the Kage to jump in but it would have been appreciated. He allowed a moment of silence and once it was clear his response was expected, he'd say:

"......If you aren't prepared to kill me then you'll lose. I accept your challenge but if you insult me by refusing to use your blade then I am not responsible for what happens next."

He picked his tea back up and continued to sip it. Chen didn't particularly feel like fighting but he knew that his Sensei's pride was on the line. Masaru had expected him to "keep up" and he took that command as metaphorical and not just literal. He expected Chen to represent Iwa with all the power and ferocity that the shinobi world was known for. If he declined, he'd look like a pathetic weakling that hid behind his Sensei's skirts. He had no choice but to accept. Masaru had given him autonomy but he knew that autonomy came with certain expectations. He despised the dance of power between subordinate and superior but he had been roped in for now. So far it yielded benefits and thus he was content to play his part. That part entailed making his Sensei look like the Champion he thought he was.

Masaru backed up Chen's words. It wasn't all that surprising, they were here as a team and it was probably best to operate like one. If Chen damaged this Samurai irreparably it might offend the Shogun but if he was damaged due to his own hubris then he'd have no one to blame but himself.

Oda would listen to both of their warnings and nod slowly. They seemed bent upon fighting in such a manner that to be wounded would be expected. If he did not draw his blade he would lose. That was the determination they stood by. That fighting and facing death was their way. It was a sad truth really. However his own pearl white eyes would settle on his sword a moment before he spoke quietly.

"I fear you misunderstood something. I did not mean to imply you were so weak I would not need my blade. I have no doubt that I will lose this spar if I make this choice. However I must choose this for it is not your weakness I fear but my own. I am not the kind of man that can control himself once steel is drawn. I become something else....something less. I do not mean to mock you but if I draw my blade I do not know that I am capable of stopping myself. War has been bred into my blood and the truth is I am but another monster once battle insues. If you insist upon my drawing of it I will but I plead with you, do not ask this of me."

He would bow his head before collecting his sheathed weapon. Nearly as tall as he was. He would set down his tea and quietly emerge from the tent. His steps carrying passed the Samurai guard who bowed to him but stepped to the side. Remaining out of the way to watch. Oda himself would move to the bridge over the cavernous expanse below they had just crossed. As he stepped across the bridge to the center the snow and ice would melt and pour off the sides as water. Freezing once more before hitting the ground below. He had chosen a strange battleground. A mere ten meters wide so there would be very little chance of being able to escape any ninjutsu attacks. It was as if he had purposefully chosen to be at a disadvantage twice over. Still he would turn as the snow falling around him turned to rain drops. His pearl white eyes calm as he turned to look back to his opponent. Iwa was known for their strength. However Oda could not doubt his abilities now. He respresented the strength of Iron. The strength of his clan. Still he would call out.

"You have been warned of my nature. Would you still have me draw my blade knowing I can not maintain control?"

Masaru wouldn't react to the man's words at first, the truth was he wouldn't mind them both going all out. It it got too out of hand on either side, Masaru could easily intervene before either side got truly hurt. Masaru would make no move or say anything as Oda left the tent, once Oda left the tent Masaru would let out a sigh. "These Samurai are more uncivilized and barbaric then I thought, I can only hope Kensai is less so." Masaru stated in a low voice so that only Chen who was standing next to him would be able to hear him, "that tea was horrible." Masaru stated with a disgusted look upon his face before turning to look at Chen, "You understand that you are not required to do this, and I would not think less of you if you didn't." His tone would be the same monotone it always was, detached from emotion. Yet at the same time would hold a hint of concern, that the boy was merely doing it to appease man and did not truly wish to do it. However, if Chen continued Masaru would motion for him to go out the tent first. As Chen would go to walk past Masaru to exit the tent the man would whisper, "Do not hold back, This is the Way." The look in Masaru's eyes would say it all, he expected Chen to view this the same way as the training with Masaru.

Post by Chen Kimyōnakama Sun Jun 28, 2020 11:21 am

Chen started at the Hinode as he explained why he could not fight with his blade drawn. The man lacked self-restraint and once he bared steel, he would not stop until one of them was dead. Chen valued his sense of self-preservation over pleasing his sensei. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up as Oda described that he would not be able to restrain himself once the fight began. Chen knew that he could rely on Masaru to step in if things got too serious, but that would defeat the whole point of the spar. It dawned on Chen that Oda might be goading him into a fight with the express purpose of beating Chen so badly that Masaru would have no choice but to step in. Ordinarily, this wouldn't bother him. He was relatively confident in his abilities as a shinobi and he had already accepted the challenge. Yet with this new revelation, Chen knew he had to go all out and in order to go all out he'd need to activate his Rinnegan.

Chen didn't know much about its origin, but what he did know he had been told by his "father" of sorts. The artifact of power was coveted throughout the cosmos. If he revealed it to the world then he'd be in mortal danger. Shinobi from this world and beyond would come looking for him. They'd take his power and either kill him or leave him unable to fend for himself. He'd lose his connection to the only source of existential stability. It'd be bad. Chen wasn't opposed to revealing his status as a Rinnegan holder once he had gotten stronger but at the moment it was about to create a liability for himself, his Kage, and his new village. Backing out now would make Iwa look weak but the maddened Hinode was not giving him any other choice. He left the tent briefly, giving Chen a chance to speak with his Master. When Masaru talked shit about the tea, Chen smiled. It was an involuntary response indicating his amusement. The tea was indeed bad but he didn't expect much from Samurai sleeping in the snow. Masaru said that he wasn't expected to do this and Chen wasn't sure whether to take the statement at face-value. Either way, he'd already made his decision.

"I can take him.....but if he is battle-crazed I will probably need to use a talent of mine that is very powerful. I'd prefer to keep it a secret for now. Revealing it to the world here and now could put everything in danger"

When Oda called back into the tent Chen would reply:

"You don't have any self-control. That's your problem not mine. I'm not a pit bull, I don't fight mad dogs. Acceptance withdrawn."

Chen drained the rest of his tea and wouldn't say another word on the subject. If he tried to explain himself to Oda he'd look even more slavish and pathetic. It was best to say his piece and let the adults do the interpreting.

Oda would listen to the words called from the tent and his shoulders would slump. He had hoped to see the might of Iwa for himself. Still being called a mad dog while fair was a little insulting. All the same he collected himself and took a breath. There would be no good brought by insulting his guests or trying to force them into combat with him. He would call back in return calmly. "You have wisdom beyond your years young man. You're wish to not be engaged in a spar shall be respected. Here within our borders we seek the honorable path. One who does not wish to fight will not be forced to. It is the duty of those of us who will fight to protect those who would otherwise not. Not that you need it but I offer my protection once your guide returns with word if you would have me." He was being cautious. He did not mention weakness or cowardice as it would do no such good here. Instead he wished to make them comfortable. Welcoming them as best as he knew how while remaining blissfully unaware of their repeated insults to his people. Such mutterings overheard would have a very different conversation.

His sensory however pinged as he turned. At the end of the bridge two men approached. Wearing mountain colors it appeared they wished to cross the bridge. However most of the skirmishes had been with them. Attempting to claim that which was not theirs. Oda would turn and watch them with white eyes studying the two. One was a large man with shaggy black hair and a long black beard wearing dark furs. The man next to him was smaller with a lithe frame. He too was wearing furs but was bald and had one eye. Daggers decorated his belt like gems on a decoration piece. They would stand there as the samurai by Oda would move to place himself between the tent and the bridge. "State your business." Oda would say coldly. His own hand resting on the hilt of his Odachi now. The big one would grunt but the smaller one would hiss through his teeth before stepping onto the bridge. "We believe the leader of a nation is here, we would have words with him before he mistakenly speaks to Iron." He would hiss again and rest his hands on a couple of daggers. Tension building on the bridge.

Oda would watch those hands a moment before turning and speaking out loud. "These men would like an audience. But they have proven enemies of Iron as of late. It is my duty however to keep them from crossing this bridge. If you would speak to them I would ask that you do so on the other side. If you will not, I will prevent them from crossing here and now. I would be honored to show you our Iron Will." He would not attack right away. If the Tsuchikage chose to speak with those of the mountain over those of the Iron it would be terrible news for Iron. But honor was honor. Still Oda would not take his eyes off the two. If he let down his guard they wouldn't be so honorable and he knew it.

Masaru would listen as Chen explained that he would have to use a talent that could put him and the village in danger, though he didn't quite understand what the boy meant by it he would not press the issue. The man would let out a heavy sigh as Chen called out to Oda insulting him by calling him a mad dog, of course it was due to the man's own words of not being able to control himself still the Tsuchikage would feel it as an unnecessary comment. "Perhaps another time would be more suitable, our journey here has been long and the boy must be tired." Masaru stated as an apology for what Chen had said, before looking a Chen and adding quietly. "Let us not insult our host so openly, our words carry weight. Though you do not yet understand, the samurai can potentially be a valuable ally in the coming days." his tone was not angry with what Chen had said simply the calm indifferent Sensei he has always been. It wasn't a scolding, it was words of wisdom of being respectful to ones host.

The man could feel the tension in the air before he heard the words from outside the tent, a smirk would form on his face when he heard them say mistakenly speaking to iron. "It would seem we have more guest, let us hope you will not need to use that talent after all." He stated to Chen as he exited the tent. Masaru would approach the bridge until he was standing next to Oda, he could see that they were from the land of mountains but that was the extent of his knowledge of them. Unlike with Iron, there was no rumors spreading of their ruler and the honorable man he was, therefore he saw no real reason to speak with them about anything. However after a moment of contemplation Masaru would call out to the two men from his position next to Oda, "I do not know you or your business here, but you have insulted me by interrupting a meeting I am having by demanding to speak with me. If I had a desire to speak with the ruler of the land of mountains do you not think I would be in your country speaking with him, instead I am here. Surely it is obvious that I hold the land of Iron in higher respect than I hold the land of mountains. However, I am interested in knowing what makes you think you have the right to demand an audience with me? Be warned if I do not like your answer, the samurai will be the last thing you need to worry about" His tone would be calm and collected, carrying the weight of a leader with every word. If Masaru decided that their reasoning for intruding on his meeting with the land of Iron, it would only take a few seconds for their heads to be on pikes. However, Masaru was a reasonable man which is the only reason he allowed them to continue to speak.

Chen listened as Oda gave a modest reply to his blatant insult. He was rather surprised that the samurai took his decision so well. Either the man was being patronizingly mocking or he didn't want the smoke to begin with and the whole thing had been an elaborate bluff.  Tsuchikage was not fond of his reply but he wanted to show his sensei that he wasn't afraid of talking down to these pathetic sword wielders. He may have refused the challenge but as far as he was concerned the nation was more or less fodder. Chen nodded in response to the scolding he had received. He would be more kind in the future but his cold expression would make his thoughts regarding the samurai abundantly clear. He remained silent as he observed the happenings around him.  Apparently a batch of additional guests had arrived. Masaru joked about them having to reveal Chen's secret. The young man didn't smile at the jape. There was nothing funny about his curse.

Chen joined Oda and Masaru outside the tent. He kept his hands outside of his pockets despite the biting cold. He'd need them free for what could come next. Chen listened as his sensei dismissed the newcomers. The man sounded calm but there was an edge to his words. Chen believed him when he said that Oda would be the least of his worries. Chen had declined the spar and Iwa still had to show that it was a powerful nation. These new fish provided an excellent excuse to do so. Maybe Chen could flex against them as well thereby demonstrating to Oda that he was indeed a shinobi to be respected and feared. He readied himself for combat but didn't say a word or move a muscle. If a fight broke out, he wasn't going to be the one to start it. That said, he'd be more than willing to help finish it.

Post by Oda Sat Jul 18, 2020 1:49 pm

Oda would find himself shocked as the two men exited the tent and the Tsuchikage himself addressed the situation. Speaking to them against their fever dream. As if they could force a conversation with this man. It was a delusional and now it was clear that they had made a mistake. Oda would watch the two men ready for a fight at his side and couldn't help but smile. There was hesitation in the eyes of the two before they would grit their teeth and growl audibly. "We wanted to do this peacefully but if you won't even hear us out....than you need to be eliminated here and now." The one on the right would throw something straight up into the air before it burst a shining red. A flare. They had planned for this and had reinforcements it seemed. Men began emerging from the tree line by the dozens. Oda would gaze between them all and whistle. Talk about a show of force. His sensory would slowly expand but truth be told they he brought the man power to take on a Kage. Or maybe not. There had to be about thirty of them. If they had come before the Tsuchikage arrived....well that would have been a hard battle.

Oda however would shift his gaze down as if looking under the bridge. He would sigh before speaking himself just loud enough for the two men with him to hear. "There are three men below. My guess is they intend to blow the bridge with us on it. I will focus on handling them but to ensure as much perhaps the young master could come with me? Merely to assure such destruction not happen. Or if you prefer to retreat to more favorable grounds I will hold the bridge until such a time as you are safely away. The choice is yours." Such a large show of force by the mountain village was surprising. However he did understand the tactics of it. The Iron and mountains were enemies at the moment and if Iron gained the support of the closest major village the end of the mountain was nigh. With that Oda would reach up and slowly draw out his Odachi. It was an old weapon. A relic of a former time and passed down to him. However as soon as it was emerged fully Oda would blink and when he opened his eyes they would be a burning red. A smirk spreading across his lips as flames began to lick down his blade. There was hesitation now from those emerging from the woods. One of the two men would reach for his own sword as he growled out.

"Shit...I didn't expect Ifrit to be here too."

Post by Masaru Sun Jul 19, 2020 5:15 am

Masaru was surprised at the sudden jump to hostilities from the would be emissaries, though considering how fast they went from wanting to talk to signalling an attack made the man think that it was their plan all along. He would make his move as soon as the mountain man threw the flare into the air, reaching to his back beneath his cloak Masaru would grip Soulstring pulling it from it's holster and activating it's switch cause it to uncurl to it's full form as he drew the bow. With a fluidity that would make one think it was all within the same motion the man would draw the string of the bow, as he did an arrow made of pure chakra would appear notched in the bow. He would first aim it at e one who had thrown the flare, though he wouldn't shoot it. Instead he would wait for the charging men to draw closer before changing his aim and firing the chakra arrow into the air in an arc so that it would reach the same point the flare had hit, as the mountain men came charging forward the chakra arrow would reach it's mark and explode raining chakra Senbons down upon everyone within a sixty meter radius below the arrow's explosion. This wouldn't kill them all if any but it would slow them down, "I can hold things here," Masaru would state calmly as he pulled the string of the bow once more forming three arrows with his steel release and launching them into the hearts of three of the mountain men. If Chen chose to go with Oda that would be up to him, however Masaru was confident in his ability to hold the bridge from the mountain men. His skill with a bow was unmatched and he doubted the mountain men were a true threat despite their numbers.

When the flare shot into the sky, Chen immediately brought his hands together to form a few seals. It might have been premature but given the situation, he beleived he was justified in taking preventative measures. It appeared as though his decision was wise. Not long after the flare had been shot, an entire contingent of Mountain-Nin burst onto the scene. Chen looked to his sensei for guidance. He said that he could handle things here which meant that he should go with Oda. The alien eyed the samurai suspiciously but gave a solemn nod to his sensei. He held the seal he had prepared before and watched as the Tsuchikage engaged their enemies. He noticed how unbothered Masaru seemed by the sudden turn of events. It was as if the ambush was just a mild inconvenience. To Chen this was now a life or death situation but either Masaru wasn't threatened or he was excellent at hiding it. Chen's eyes betrayed his uncertainty but the rest of his face was hard. He had suffered and fought before. This was no different. They couldn't let the bridge be destroyed. Masaru was here to treat with the samurai and it would do Iwa no favors if their ally's property was annihilated on the first meeting.

Chen cursed his luck. If these Mountain-Nin could give Masaru trouble then he might be forced to use his Rinnegan after all. The child watched Oda wield a flaming sword with a smile on his face. Bows.....Swords....I need to get a signature weapon of my own Chen internally commented. He edged closer to Oda. He was willing to let the swordsman take the lead. This was his land after all.

Oda would watch as senbon rained from the sky down on the fools who would challenge a Kage. Had Kensai known of this none would remain standing. None would be allowed to return home. They had come prepared for war and now this was their reward. Overwhelming power against them. Chen seemed to acknowledge the difference in might as well and edged closer to Oda. Red eyes shifted to him a moment. They seemed to stare at him for only a second but it was clear about one thing. With his sword drawn he was not the same calm man as before. Ruby eyes looked away as he was still able to recognize allies and he was moving. His feet gathering chakra at the bottoms of the soles before launching over the side. One hand grabbing the railing to swing himself back over and his feet connecting to the bottom of the bridge. There they were. Three men placing explosive charges. They saw him come down and immediately drew their swords. If they set off the explosives now it wouldn't do enough damage to the bridge. They had to get it set up just right. So they would have to fight off the assailants first.

Oda would smile at the three men. It wasn't like he was all that much stronger than them. More likely he was on par on a one on one scenario. He also knew Chen was tired from traveling and did not know the young mans capabilities. He would glance to Chen if he joined them and speak with a grin on his lips. "I am going to create an opening. Do not fret over my well being. I will be fine. Use it wisely." With that Oda turned his attention back to the men as he let out a low growl. Like a fool he would charge their line as they charged him. No real defense, nothing impressive with his speed. Instead they met head long. Before he could swing his sword three swords stabbed forward. All three glancing off his breast plate and sliding into his abdomen. It looked as if this samurai had just charged into his death. However there was a low chuckle. Something dark mixed with blood coming out of his mouth. "Is that all you think it takes to kill a hinode?" he would ask before suddenly his sword came crashing down into the neck of the one in the center. Slicing in and igniting the man on fire. He choked out a gurgling scream before losing his concentration and falling from the bridge. The one to Oda's left found a hand reaching out and grabbing him by the face before he found himself struggling to break free. The last of the three drew his sword back with an alarmed scream before attempting to plunge it back into Oda. Who seemed content to simply stand there and take it.

The mountain men continued despite the downpour, hitting three more in the chest with arrows as he watched Oda move off to fight those below the bridge. Chen going with the samurai would more than likely be for the best. He would draw the string of his bow back, creating three more arrows from his steel release before channeling chakra into them and igniting them on fire before launching them. This time however they didn't strike three in the heart like before, instead the went in such a way that the arrow head would ignite their clothes on fire as it past. Four men would fall screaming from the fire that now engulfed them, however Masaru wouldn't miss a beat quickly launching three more arrows to slice the jugulars of the approaching men, this would bring six more down to their knees, however with total dead of sixteen there was still more to go before the men of the mountains would stop. This of course did not bother Masaru in the least, because to him they were nothing more than criminals attacking his would be ally. He could not let that happen even if it meant he had to kill every last man from the land of mountains, it would be up to them when this would end but until then Masaru would continue to kill every single soldier that attempted to get within 25 meters of the bridge on the other side.

Chen watched as the samurai courageously leapt over the bridge and made for its underside. There was no time to think, just do! The goth followed Oda and magnetized himself to the Samurai Bridge's underbelly. He was still holding the seal he had made from before and it was a good thing too. There was a group of men setting explosives to blow the place to high hell. Chen cared not for the construct but it was clear that circumstances weren't giving him a choice. If he wanted to live and earn his sensei's approval then he'd need to cut down these Mountain-Nin. Chen bit the inside of his cheek when Oda offered to be live bait. Either the man truly was a mad dog or he wanted to die and this moment provided him a convinent excuse. Either way, Chen allowed him to dash forwards. The boy eyed the interaction watching for an opening.

Chen then watched in horror as the man was ran through with a blade almost instantly. It was as if he longed for the sweet release of death. Chen had speculated the man to be suicidal but to see it confirmed right here and now was nothing short of astonishing. Chen almost lost concentration on the jutsu he was holding. However, the samurai didn't die. He said something to the enemy and then began to attack them despite the grevious injuries inflicted. Chen froze as he watched the samurai fought steel with fire. The survivor was perturbed and in that instant, Chen knew what he had to do. He charged forwards and unleashed a torrent of flame from his mouth. The fireball took the shape of a giant dragon's head and careened into the enemy soldier. The man would instantly be immolated and send hurtling to his death below. The speed and ferocirty of the flames made it such that the still engaged Oda would likely be burned as collateral damage. Chen had not been intending to strike his ally but he was but a genin and the jutsu he had cast was B-Rank. Chen expected the man to be caught ablaze and be burnt to a crisp. The boy's heart froze as he realized he needed to either fess up to killing their only ally and a citizen of the Iron or lie and say the Mountain-Nin got to him first. Chen grit his teeth racking his brain to try and find a way to explain Oda's death. Such an occurrence was inevitable. Wasn't it?

The fire jutsu would erupt forth and crush through everything between Chen and the end of the bridge with a roar. The explosives and enemies and one ally all burnt in it's mighty wake. The sheer power of the jutsu shaking the bridge as dust began to fall from the sides. The underside scorched as flames licked along the bottom. It wouldn't be enough to take down the bridge as it hadn't been directed directly at the structure but for now it coated the underside in an inferno. The men above seeing their numbers dropping without getting to step a single foot on the bridge began to retreat without grabbing their dead. None of them had expected their numbers to mean nothing against the power of the Tsuchikage. They didn't know what their future held but whatever it was, this event had sealed it. They knew now that they could do nothing against Iwa's might. They would sleep with one eye open if they slept at all. Plagued by dreams of the man on a bridge with a single bow. Their forces crushed with each twing of the bow string. They had played with fire and in return gotten burned.

The flames licked the underside of the bridge and it appeared as if everything in it's wake had been wiped out. Yet only the mountain mans body had dropped from the bridge. Chen was contemplating what he would say when the flames seemed to split a little as a figure walked through them. Fire flickering along his burnt robes and hair. Darkened flesh rapidly repairing itself before Chens very eyes. Even the parts burnt to the bone seemed to return to normal undamaged flesh within seconds. Red eyes regarded him a moment as Oda's skin reformed on his face. Slowly those eyes would look to Chens before he would sheath his sword and the eyes would return to their pure white. He seemed to be coldly studying Chen now. His robes tattered along the right side and so burnt that it seemed impossible that his body within ten seconds was fully healed. He would step forward as the flames danced behind him. Moving to stand before Chen as he stopped to where they were standing side by side facing opposite directions. He would speak quietly now as he stood there a moment. He wasn't attempting to threaten or anything. Just a simple question.

"Do you still doubt the might of an Iron Samurai?"

With that Oda would shift to walk back up the side of the bridge and land up top nearby where Masaru was. Looking out over the destruction the man had left in his wake. Despite his clothes looking like he had gone through a war zone Oda looked unhurt. Not a scratch on him despite his blood stained, burnt clothes revealing the ebony armor underneath. He would look to Masaru with white eyes regarding him all over again. He would bow his head respectively before speaking in a louder but more respectful tone.

"I am impressed by you're skills Lord Tsuchikage. I do however wish to apologize for the incident. Our problems spilling out just after you arrived. It is shameful."
