The bell on the door of the shinobi toolshop jingled violently as Hotaru barged in. As luck would have it, his first salary had come in even before he completed his first mission. He has never had this much coin before, but he knew very well that there was no room for mindless spending. Konoha shinobi were expected to take care of their own equipment, so his first priority was to gear up.
As he kept one hand on the rather uncomfortable amount of money in his, his other ran past the cabinets and vitrines of the store. Shuriken. Senbon. Katanas. He had seen all these before at the academy, though he wasn't necessarily proficient at all of them. With so many options to choose from, where do you start? Fortunately, the man from behind the counter stepped in.
"Fresh genin, I assume? First time shopping?"
Hotaru paused for a moment. Was his inexperience this obvious? No time for pride. He needed all the help he could get.
"That's right. First time gearing up, but I have to admit: I'm a little overwhelmed. What do genin usually buy?"
"That would depend on the type of shinobi they are. Barely anyone leaves the store without at least a few kunai and shuriken, though."
Hotaru looked around. Was he any particular type of shinobi? He was a taijutsu specialist, if anything. Not much going on there in the weaponry department. Still, something to stab or throw with couldn't hurt.
"In that case I'll have 10 kunai and 30 shuriken, please..."
His eye wandered over to a rack of second hand weapons in the corner. A kusarigama. His dad used to keep one of those in his stable back in the days, in case of bandits or thugs. Hotaru wasn't quite proficient with it, but still, it couldn't hurt to have it in a pinch.
"And I'll take that kusarigama, please"
The man nodded and began packing the order. As Hotaru waited, he peered past the storeowner into a backroom which appeared to contain a small workbank with tools, bits and pieces scattered around.
"That's a nice workshop you have back there. Do you produce your own wares?"
"Oh no, no no no. I wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand. It's just a small workshop for custom requests."
"Do you happen to have any scraps of material that I could take off of your hands?"
The question seemed to catch the storeowner off guard. This wasn't an everyday request. After taking a second, the man shrugged, looked around the corner of his workshop and sweeped a few bits of leather, cotton and brass in a bag. He wrote a few things down in what appeared to be a ledger and turned to Hotaru.
"That'd be 5600 ryo, please."
Hotaru dug around in his pockets and counted his coins until he found a way to add up to the right amount. He exchanged his money for his goods, waved at the helpfull owner and got on his merry way. He now had everything he needed to truly kickstart his carreer as a shinbi.
