It was unlike her, to say the least. The maids stood by, only following the single order to clean up after their master. Rei tossed another pan into the sink, the maids reaching out to minimize the damage to the house. She continued to place the treats all over the large plates. She had been at it for hours, not stopping for a single moment. Clones of her standing around, only to be dispearsed to leave large puddles of water on the ground. The maids would watch in disgust, but in relief knowing it was in its final stages. The monster had been satisfied.

Rei had awoken in the early hours of the day with only a single thing in mind; Food. But not just any, sweets. Cookies and honey roasted meat covered the counter in a candy shop-esque fashion. Pastel colored plates with gold engravings and rims. The woman herself stood, her black tank top covered in flour, with chocolate smeared on her face. But still, she managed to leave her lipstick and makeup untouched. She lifted a finger to lick the frosting off the tip, a smile on her face as she carried a few of the plates to the table. Blue faded sweats covered her legs as she walked barefoot around her house, only her ankles and heels wrapped in the bandage type cloth. In just a few moments, she had set the dinner table, while the maids tried to fight and clean up after the chaos in the kitchen. Honey roasted pork, various cookies, strawberry and chocolate syrup that both sat in gravy boats. It would be any child's dream to have a feast like this. So Akereseirei sat patiently, taking only a single steamed carrot, and smothering it in honey before taking a large bite. She crossed her legs upon her seat, and resting in the corner, her new blade, Kubikiribocho. But today was not about her climbing back to where she once stood proud. Today was about her son.

". . . any moment now." she spoke to herself, waiting.

    Name: Water Clone Technique
    Rank: C
    Cost: -
    Range: 25 m.
    Speed: -
    Element: Water
    Skill: Ninjutsu
    Classification: N/A
    Requirement: N/A
    Parent Technique: N/A
    Handseals: Tiger
Description: By using water as a medium, the user can create one or more clones of themselves. While the clones can perform techniques, they only possess one-tenth of the user's chakra and cannot go too far from the original. The clones can also be used as medium to perform other Water Release techniques, as demonstrated by Kisame when he reverted their arms into water to perform the Water Prison Technique. When these clones are struck with a sufficient amount of force they will revert to their water form. The clones can be created anywhere within a 25 m. range of the user, unlike the Shadow Clone technique which requires clones to be created next to the user (such ranged spawning would require the clone to be spawned from a pre-existing source of water)
Drawbacks: When casting this technique the user's stamina must be above 30% in order to maintain control over his/her clones. In addition, the user must maintain general concentration to maintain their clone's presence. If at any time the user is inflicted with heavy damage in contrast with their Constitution all clones will be dispersed. The user must be within 25 m. of their clone.

    He felt naked.

Chigetsu chose to dress in a very specific way. It was carefully constructed. Not just the contents of his wardrobe itself, but the variety of accessories he wore, the different brands of makeup, the different brands of skin care products - It was something he put a lot of thought and effort into, and took pride in. It was difficult to find things that suited him. Any sort of makeup that he wore had to be specially waterproofed, made specifically for Hozuki usually, and the same was more often than not true of the clothing he wore. Everything had to be made with the context of his physiology in mind. Then the issue of his personal brand of aesthetics would come into play. He had a clear fondness of pink and purple, evident just from his hair and the way he often dressed littered in these colors. Matching and complementary colors had to be picked, compatible accessories, and then even if everything initially felt like it would work out in his mind it would have to be tested in front of a mirror.

He was especially vain, although it was something he hid. The amount of time that he spent preparing himself in front of a mirror each morning was a true testament to how much Chigetsu cared about his appearance.

There wasn’t any of that today. The way he dressed was simple and muted in comparison. He was wearing pants for maybe the first time in months. Palazzo pants, which while were rare for men to wear these days were still absolutely unisex. Vertical blue stripes ran down the length of the flowing white, silken fabric. It was worn together with a simple, similarly silk, black shirt. It was bare and bland in comparison to the usual candy store that he wore. While maybe not the most masculine, it was exceedingly so in comparison to how he normally dressed.

The braid remained. It was important to him. He couldn’t give that up. Even if he had been given permission not to, it had never really been a question in his mind.

He stood outside the front gates. It took some time for him to gather the strength to press forward. Eventually, eventually he would come to the front.

The doorknob would be tested for a moment. Locked, of course. The door would be knocked at, a gentle rap of his knuckles against the wood.

A large bite followed her impatient nibbling of the carrot. The end of it, rather than tossed out like most other people, was eaten as well, only after dipped in chocolate. The path as it returned to Rei's mouth left a few drops on the table as she got up from her seat. Surely, it was any moment now, she might as well waited by the door, right? So she walked, each step of the soft pat pat of her bare feet against the laminated wooden floors. Pieces replaced over the years, some parts a polished brown, while others the now strengthened bamboo. All of it waterproofed, not just for the family's own prowess, but Rei's own behaviors to flood the home any time she needed help. Puddles would be left everywhere, and rugs replaced when left out too long unattended. She strolled her path, only for the sound of knocking to be heard.

The door would swing open, but rather than Rei, another female would appear. Her straight black hair, her bangs covering her face. She spoke not a word as she opened the door for the son of her employer.

"Caitlyn, who is at the door?"

    "Your son, Lady Hozuki."

The answer could only be followed up by the sound of her steps growing faster and louder as she grew near, only to stop around the corner. Rei would slowly walk around, peeking to find her son when he would enter. She would take a few more steps, only to cut the distance. Seeing him, words would spill from her lips. She would look at his appearance, from top to bottom.

"It looks nice." She would say. "But you look uncomfortable."

“It’s all silk. It fits well and it’s comfortable.” He answered the question without answering the question. Used to being stared at, Chigetsu didn’t pay much mind to his mother’s gaze. He wouldn’t have dressed as he did if he wasn’t prepared to accept these things. The colors were different, along with the more gender-neutral style, but nothing that he couldn’t adjust to. It was temporary, and an outfit he chose himself to adjust to it. Until these exams were over. Then he would return to normal. Things would be fine then. “You told me not to wear any bright colors anyway. I’m doing my best to get used to it until then.”

He peeked inside, attention returning to the architecture. It was the second time in recent memory he had come here, after years of never stepping foot in its vicinity. It was just a few days ago. That whole scenario played over in his head. The beginning and end, both taking place here where he was standing now. So much had changed in between. There had only been three days between the end of the written exam and the beginning of the survival portion of the exams, but it felt like more change had happened in these three days than the last three years of his life.

He entered hesitantly, without asking. Seeing as the door had been opened for him he could only presume he was allowed to come in.

“I went to that tailor like you asked me to.” He would let those words fill the air, unsure of what else to say but unwilling to remain in silence.

She nodded, what he said was true, and if this was what he picked out, then it would be enough to use in the exams. If he picked it, then it would allow him to freely use what he wanted, which meant he would get home. He would return alive, in this. She would wave him to follow along to the dining room where the feast had been waiting. Some of it may have been chilled by now, but the staff had taken to setting up some heating plates, as well as other meals Rei was much too unskilled to cook. Things would be rearranged, and her small mess from her snack would also be tidied up.

Pictures replaced and framed, some removed and some set face down. A portrait of both Akeruseirei and Engtsu hung in the main room, and pictures of Chigetsu with his later dyed hair were placed. Any, and all evidence of his white hair would be removed from the house, that was, except the single photo of him as a child with his family. The photo rested face down, hidden, blind to the rest of the room.

"Good. I'm glad you did." She would say, stopping to look back at him to see he was staying close and keeping pace. Rather than the last time where she pushed him throughout the house, she led, her own attire as plain as his. "If you would like," Moments before turning into the room, she would address him, "We can get you a tie for your hair to make sure you don't make a mess."

As they would enter the room, the maids would begin to open other boxes filled with other treats and begin to place them on the table. All of the chairs remained where they were, allowing either of them to sit where they were. But in the back corner, still rested Rei's new possession, and she would take the seat closest to it. The chair she had always taken.

He followed her as she led him, purely through instinct. Part of him wanted to acknowledge the maids and servants that were throughout the home, but at the same time it felt almost impossible to do so. Even if he recognized a few of their faces from when he previously lived here none of their names came to mind. They were like furniture to him, as bad as that sounded. Even in his mind he realized it was terrible to think about other people that way, but he couldn’t help it. An awkward smile would be directed towards the maids as he came in, trailing at his mother’s back.

Already things were so different. Just from the beginning. Little things. Very many little things. The offer to get a tie for his hair. He didn’t notice the change in photos, with the situation already feeling surreal, but if he had it would have just confirmed to him the new reality he had woken up into.

“A hair tie? That would be nice.”

The opening of the sweets would catch his gaze, but he could smell the sugar in the room before they even unboxed it. He was predictable, driven strongly by base desires. His eyes would scour the table. The expression he was wearing would shift. When she said just like before she really meant it. This was a lot. All different kinds of sugar. They were similar in taste when it came to this.

He would take a seat as well, not far from his mother. The infamous metal sword that was now in the room caught his eyes, although he made no comments on it. He knew what it was, but these were things he had no concept for. Chigetsu’s world was too small for it. All that he had were a few relationships he cherished and the interior of his apartment. Things were slowly growing bigger, but this all remained outside his scope.

“This is…. This is a lot. You must have spent a long time on it all.” His gaze turned down to one of the cream pastries, some sort of pie.

Even though they were maids, they were still people. They had value, some holding certain bloodlines, while others came from clans with no recognition. Some only worked for a short time, having their friends aid them on getting a job with the Hozuki. But most, were just regular people. But here, they were more than servants, at least when Rei was around. They weren't paid slaves like with Engetsu. Here, they were allowed their time away, and some even stayed in guest rooms, while others lived outside of the estate.

Upon his word, one of the maids would quickly arrive with a pink tie for Chigetsu's hair. A smile on her face from a familiar older woman, not that much more than his mother. Her hair white, with her roots blackened. One of the longest serving maids of the household who went by the name Ayase. Someone who had taken a liking to the family at such a great extend, she dyed her own hair at an attempt to fit into their culture better. Unlike the others, it wasn't about the payment, it was purely because she liked the family, mistakes and all. After handing the tie, she would find her place back at the doorway, folding her hands over the front of her waist, awaiting any request of the household members.

She would take a seat at the head of the table, her husband's chair the only piece missing. "Not a second wasted." She would say, before reaching to grab a slice of cake, and a baked pork bun. After placing it in front of her, she would grab the chocolate syrup and drizzle it over both of the items in front of her.

She would lift the bun to her mouth, taking a large bite. She would chew it for a moment before speaking, swallowing it after her first word. "Is... there anything new?" she would ask him. Sall talk, perhaps. But she was curious to any changes.

He knew their faces, even if their names slipped from his memory. A kind older woman, someone who had everything it took to look like a grandmother, would bring the requested hair tie over to Chigetsu. As it was offered he would greet her with a smile. Something about seeing the same faces here made things feel similar to how he remembered, even if the heavy air of emotions hung down still over the house. The tie would be gently taken from her, and he would reach around to his back in order to tie his hair up. He would give a slight nod to her, a silent ‘thank you’.

Seeing what his mother chose was immediately amusing though. The way she drizzled chocolate syrup over it all. The cake was fine, but the pork bun too? It was how she always was. One of those silly little intricacies. When he was younger it had been something he accepted as normal, but as time passed and he grew it was something he quickly realized was not. It still helped develop his tastes as a young child though, and those followed him for his entire life even if not growing to the same extent as his mother. He would reach for some food himself. A slice of that cream pie would be taken and placed onto a plate. Rather than being entirely cream it seemed to have a layer of condensed lemon at the bottom, which he could see now that he had cut into it. A pork bun would be placed beside it, something to give him some actual nutrients, although the sugar was really what he desired. He wouldn’t go so far as to drizzle syrup over the bun, but the thought did cross his mind.

“New…? Uh…” He thought about it for a moment as he dug a fork into the pie. There was a lot that had happened recently. “I was supposed to go on a mission with my friend Calis, but he canceled at the last minute, so I had to do it on my own. It was weird being alone while doing it. I’m used to having a partner.” It was something to talk about, and harmless to discuss. She had never mentioned Calis to her before, but he was likely Chigetsu’s best friend at the moment. There were a few other things that he could talk about, but…

He really didn’t want to discuss the date that he had been on with her, for one. That was… Just thinking about it brought a slight flush to his cheeks. This wasn’t an appropriate subject right now.

"Not that much... Just... I've been talking to some friends and preparing I guess. I found out who I'm going to be partnered with for the Survivals. Some girl named Inarie Kaguya. There hasn't been much other than that."

Quite often, Rei kept her meals tame and refined for Engetsu's sake. Never had she eaten like this in public, always in the safety of her home, often hidden away in her office or some other corner of the house. Small and weird snacks tucked away in cabinets, known and left alone by the maids. Some things behind bookshelves, and others behind paintings. Small moments, only to be seen by her child. Moments she figured he would forget and grow out of. Even in moments where her stashes were fed on by the boy, she held no rage, for she couldn't have possibly explained herself to her husband without also explaining why she had chocolate covered pork in her office.

She shoved the rest in her mouth, much more daring and bold than she had been in a long time. Without Engetsu around the house, she had been more free to do as she wished. And as each day passed, rather than blame herself, she blamed him, for all of the suffering and pain inflicted to their child.

"Calis." she repeated, "What family does he belong to?" It was both a question of status and power, but also a good way for her to picture and get an idea of what he looked like. She chewed her food, watching her son's cheeks blush. Was it about the boy?

Oh. Oh Chigetsu was... Oh this made way more sense now.

But the mention of Kaguya had sent her back to her normal state, even with food tucked in her cheek. "Don't trust the Kaguya." she would simply say, "They turn on their own. Watch out for your back, and I'm sure you'll be fine."

She reached out, grabbing small tarts and cookies, only to pour some of the syrup onto her plate, as well as a bit of powdered sugar. There was no pattern to her choices, only that whatever she got, she would cover in something, this time, being honey. The fluids and treats all mixing to make a mound of sugary treats, only to be eaten, piece by piece.

"How long have you known this Calis?" she would ask.

He would look up to her for a moment, after having taken a piece of the pie in his mouth. The lemon filling would be savored in his mouth, it being a flavor he was fond of. That she would take interest in such a little thing wasn’t something he had expected, but maybe that was just natural. Sometimes to talk about. He had to think back for a moment, wondering if he could remember Calis’s family name. It wasn’t something they ever spoke about, except that one time, but he had seen it on mission reports every so often.

“Kazehana, I think. I’m not sure. I only know it from reading mission descriptions. I don’t think he got along with his family though.” He shrugged. It was a long time ago, when they first met, that the subject of family had ever come up.

“I mean… I hope I can. We just need to find a second relic piece or something in the jungle. I’m sure we can work together for just three days.” Maybe it was strange but Chigetsu wasn’t too concerned about what was going to happen next. He had gone into the written portion the same way. Not treating it seriously. The events that occurred during that portion and the conversation he had with his mother had slightly changed that, but now it shifted into a form of ignorance rather than half-heartedness. The survival part would be annoying, but… When it came to combat, Chigetsu had woefully little experience and underestimated how dangerous it could be. It was a part of his natural attitude as a Hozuki. He had never really been harmed when sparring. Only things like electricity could do that. When it came to combat he shied away from it not because he was afraid of getting hurt, but because he was afraid of hurting others.

“I’ve known him for…” Chigetsu would puff out his cheeks for a moment, having to think back. “At least six months now? I think? I haven’t really been keeping count but that sounds about right. He was part of what convinced me to go join the exams in the first place, with how much he spoke about it and encouraged me. We were supposed to sign up together, but I heard he decided not to at the last minute.”

He stabbed his fork down into the pie on his plate, separating the crust into two pieces and a bit of crumbs.

“He’s been weird lately, and I don’t know why. It’s been hard to talk to him, with how busy I’ve been because of the exams.”

She was out of touch for the most part. After dealing with a feline and a boat, as well as that other kid, and meeting with the kage, she wasn't that well informed about these small dealings. But as a mother, she had learned to notice the small changes in Chigetsu's behavior about certain topics. The way he spoke about certain things, or avoided others. A tart was lifted to her lips, covered in honey with chocolate at the end of it. She would bite down, breaking it in half as she listened to him talk about this friend of his.

"Kazehana." She repeated, before finishing the cookie, taking another with her honey covered fingers. Drips of the amber liquid falling back onto the plate as she dipped it, swirling it around before it met the final destination of her stomach. "I see." She would say, her own mind drifting away back to the relationship with her parents. Her father's orders, her mother's gaze.

"They are not like the Hozuki." she would speak again. "They fight to win, at all costs, even at the life of their allies." She spoke, not from an outside view, but her own. So many times she was instructed to fend for herself and stay out of other's way. Left behind, and leaving behind others. It wasn't until she was told that it was better to die, than be left behind. Words from her father that stuck to her. Words spoken each time she fell short...

"Assume everyone you meet has your weakness as their strength." She would tell him. "I've watched others di-... You'll do fine, Chigetsu." she caught herself, trying not to lecture, but enjoy the meal before them.

With his other words, she would fit an entire chocolate chip cookie in her mouth, the honey dripping from the side of her mouth as it crawled her jaw to the tip of her chin. "Half a year is a long time." She would say, nodding, reaching to another cookie, not wiping her own face. "I'm sure whatever it is, will solve itself." she would say.

“That sounds like something he would say. ‘Assume everyone you meet has your weakness as their strength’. I think he’s said exactly that before too.” He frowned a bit. Now that he recalled Calis did practically say the exact same thing at one point. Chigetsu had rolled his eyes at it in the moment, but it was something he knew that he probably should do if he was to take things seriously. That had been his problem in the written section. He assumed that the other people around him were just potential friends, instead of enemies and rivals who would be looking for any chance to tear him down. It bit him hard then.

Apparently nothing was sacred to ninja. ‘Friendship’ didn’t exist. It was annoying. Thinking about having to ever fight Calis or Kitsuki made his skin crawl. Hopefully it would never come down to that. He nodded a bit at what she said in response though. It would probably solve itself over time. Chigetsu just needed to be patient. This would probably sort itself out over time.

“Once the exams are over I’m going to try and celebrate with him and Kitsuki, if I can pull them together.” He would fork another piece of the pie into his mouth, returning to eating between talking. “Hopefully things will be better by then.” The idea of going out for milkshakes together, the three of them, sounded fun. Hopefully they would all be Chunin at that point too so nothing would be weird with them celebrating when one failed.

Despite his short comings, it seemed as if Chigetsu kept himself in good company. It had been a long time since the day she forced him out of the house. Even so, she was glad to hear he had a good head on his shoulders. Even if she was just as bad as her parents, it brought her a bit of joy to know he did not need to endure the same loneliness she did, nor the same sufferings. He wasn't alone, and he probably never would be. She nodded along, reaching out to grab a small piece of roasted beef, putting it on her sugar coated plate, mixing it with the chocolates and strawberry syrup. Rather than take the fork beside her, she picked it up with her hand, and fed herself just as the cookies, and bit away at it.

Her brows furrowed at the mention of the girl, She lowered her meat to speak. "Miss Kurahasa?" she would ask, a bit amused at what was before her. She exhaled through her nose, smiling, nodding as she took another bite of her food.

No, it couldn't be. Had she already danced around the intimacies of her son's life without knowing? Perhaps, it wasn't like Kirigakure was that big of a place to begin with. It was all a small world.

He looked up from what remained of his pie, with him having scooped out all the filling and left the crust uneaten. The last bite would be swallowed down, but Chigetsu would nod his head at the questioning. One his mouth was empty he would confirm it with words. “Yeah, Kitsuki Kurahasa. She’s, uh… Do you know of her?” Maybe he shouldn’t have been surprised. Apparently it was a small world where people could easily run into each other. Then again, it wasn’t like there were that many shinobi in the village. If people kept going on missions there was a good chance that eventually people would meet each other. That was how he met Kitsuki and Calis after all. He could only assume that his mother must have met Kitsuki that same way or heard about her from some other means.

… Did his mom go on missions? It was a weird thing to think about for some reason.

“I guess it isn’t important.” He would dismiss the thoughts. It felt weird to mix together what little social life he had together with the struggling relationship he had with his family. It was a bit awkward. Instead he would turn to the meatbun, picking at it a bit with a fork before deciding to just pick it up and take a bite out of it.

She chewed her meat, ripping another bite. Her legs lifting off the ground to be tucked under her, crossing her legs. Something normally unacceptable in the house, was being done by the woman that now ran it. She nodded, hearing him confirm her full name. "Yes, Miss Kurahasa." she would repeat. "The little black girl is your friend?" she asked, not sugarcoating her words like she was doing to her food.

Another bite followed, before she stuck the rest of her small snack into her mouth, almost feasting endlessly on small treats. She nodded, brushing the back her wrist against her face, smearing the honey both on her face, and now her hand.

"She also is friends with Mister Kazehana?" She would reach out, sliding over a slice of cake, taking the already divided piece in her hands. The maids watched nervously, one of them taking a step forward to help, before getting a nod from the other, returning back to her position. The others would leave the room, a muffled sigh.

"Of course it is important." She would say, "It is very important to pick your allies carefully." She would pick up the slice with her hands, feeding herself, taking a large bite, the pieces of cake sticking around her mouth. With her right hand, still cleaned and unused, she would point a thumb behind her, motioning to nothing in particular.

"I've known Kaisaki for almost thirty years-" she paused, her eyes half closed. Hearing herself say that amount of time had passed hadn't hit her until she realized her son was just a few years from being a grown man. A moment would pass as she processed the thought. "... Anyways. You have to trust you allies. You need to know everything, all of their weaknesses. Anything that can break them. So you can make sure, you never let them fall apart. Not ever, not again."

Chi would nearly choke. Little black girl? Were… were people allowed to say that anymore? From his mother he probably shouldn’t have been surprised, but still it shocked him a bit. He would swallow down his bite of the meat bun regardless, quickly regaining his composure. This was just normal with his mother. He would have to adjust to it and not react if he could help it. Plus, it was harmless when in private, right…?

“She’s my friend, yes. Kitsuki is. I... I don’t know if she’s friends with Calis. Just acquaintances I think. I hope they can become friends though. That would be nice. I wonder if I can make that happen.” He would take another bite and then think about it. Kitsuki was nice and easy to get along with, but Calis sort of was the lecture-y type. There was the chance they would get along, but also the chance that things would rub the wrong was between the two. It was interesting to think about. Maybe if he took them all to get milkshakes together it would be nice and happy?

“I trust them both…” He would nod a bit, watching her eat now. It was almost sort of incredible just to see her eat like she did. It was a good thing that all the maids were here. It was hard to imagine sometimes that she would be able to survive on her own, especially with food.

“Oh, Kaisaki…” Chi would follow her thumb with his eyes, although would tear his focus away when he realized she wasn’t pointing at anything. “That guy… The bartender back at the bar with the mask? He’s kind of weird.” The conversation that they had just a few days ago, that ended with Chigetsu storming out of the building in anger, was still fresh in his head. If Kisaki was his mom’s friend he wouldn’t judge him too hard, at least verbally, but still. “I remember now, he was trying to show me what was behind his mask. The way he was talking about it was creepy.”

She listened to her own son choke, her ears perked as she looked up, her hand ready to lunge. Was he about to die? Was he worth saving? Of course he was, what was she thinking. Besides, what healing would cure a clogged windpipe. She looked over, and once he was resettled, she too would gather herself.

She listened, keeping note that they were not that well off. Simply mutually friendly because of Chigetsu. He would be the bridge, and it would be crossed at another time. She continued to feast almost like she hadn't seen food. With another bite, she finished the cake, and licked her finger's clean. The mention of his mask, was the one thing that broke her focus, stopping her eating to look her son in his eyes. A gaze that would not just look at him, but past him.

"First, Kaisaki is family. More so than my own blood." The Kaguya, a stain on her past. A wound that would never heal. "He's not just a bartender. He's your uncle." The say she would say it would be strange, as if it was something even she was a bit unsure about, or that she was on the verge of tears. The pitch in her voice changing, showing some realization, but it was unknown even to her.

"Second, the only thing behind his mask is scars and fresh wounds." She would say, pausing, the smiling. "But you saw his mask, right?" She asked curiously, "I made them years ago. He broke a few of them... fuckin' imbecile." Her nose would scrunch up, tensing at the thought. Almost playfully.

There relationship was complicated, both to those on the inside, and out. But to the untrained eye, they really were just like a brother and sister.

Chigetsu would stare, watching his mother’s reaction. It hadn’t been exactly intentional, but at the same time he sort of could tell a bit of her relationship with the man. It was unintentional, but now that he had pushed that button he was watching for the reaction. It was a post-facto probing. After all that Kaisaki said on that night he couldn’t help but be curious. Firstly, curious if any of it was true. Just from her reaction it seemed that it was. At least, something was there between them. The actual truth was obscured from Chigetsu, left in the past. The specifics weren’t important, just what was in the present.

Part of him shied down away from her as she looked at him like this. It was an uncomfortable stare. He wasn’t used to it, and the focus on him and sudden change in demeanor made him uncertain and afraid. Half of it was just instinct. He needed to hold himself back from flinching away.

"I saw his mask. It was nice and colorful… How did he break them?” He hadn’t wanted to know in the moment but it seemed that his mom would just reveal the secret now. Ugly scars and fresh wounds. Chigetsu could kind of guess. Nobody just wore masks for fun. Why had Kaisaki wanted to show it to him then? Chigetsu’s opinion of him was pretty solidified after that night, but he would do his best to not say anything negative further as to spare his mother’s feelings.

“If he’s like my Uncle, why have I never met him before now?”

Sometimes, the thing that spawns the most love between people, is the mutual hatred towards another.

Kaisaki was complicated, and like Rei, was bound to his own loyalty. The both of them held honor in the highest regard, along with their word. Never would they promise something they couldn't keep. Never would they request something they knew they could not obtain. They were two sides of the same coin, and on certain occasions, they were sometimes the same side.

"He's not creepy, he's a fool." she would say, looking away and back towards the food place before them. "Reckless, like your father. but unlike Engetsu, he's fragile, like a bird with a broken wing." She would sigh, "You have met him before, when you were a child. It was different then." A cookie lifted to her lips, dry. her teeth bit down, a few of them growing pointed before returning to normal. Something instinctive that she did her best to refrain from doing. It wasn't like it was outside anymore. She was in a home. She had a family. She didn't need to fight to survive anymore.

"Your father didn't like having him around. Insisted he was poisoning your mind." She threw the second half into her mouth, biting down, chewing it. Another breath through her nostrils. "Engetsu doesn't understand what it was like for us before we returned back home. We were exiled in a sense." She looked over at him, a glance, "Your father never really had to work for anything. He was born with a silver spoon. I wanted to make sure you were better than he was." She paused, reaching out to grab another slice of cake.

"Better than I am." she would say, only to take another bite, filling her stomach as if it was filling the void within her soul. "I'll be honest Chigetsu. We've killed a lot of people.

If you ever want to see what it does to a person, ask Kai."
A soft glance at her son before she bit into the cake again. "You'll see what happens when you underestimate your enemies."

Chigetsu would nod his head. Even if he thought that Kaisaki was a creep, Chigetsu was willing to accept the logic that he was just a fool instead. There was a thin line between the two concepts, but it was something Chigetsu could appreciate and understand the difference between. It seemed that there was more history here that he wasn’t aware of. More history. It just seemed to be bursting out of the seams of every interaction, threatening to break the stitches and spill out in a mess. All over the place, filling the room until they all drowned in it. The tension between her and his father. The history with Kaisaki. The time before all that. When he was a baby, before he was born, before any of them were born. It was suffocating.

“Hopefully I won’t have to see that.” He would respond carefully, between chews of the last of his meatbun. He ate slowly. Slower than his mother did, at least. A helping of cookies would be lifted to his plate following it, being his first following the pie and bun.

“I don’t want to hurt anyone.” The rest of his thoughts came out slowly, unraveling like a ball of yarn. “I guess I’ll have to though. Even if I’m as lucky as I can be, I’ll have to fight in the finals. The tournament thing.” It was the best he could do to relate to what she said about killing. The implication would be brushed aside, glazed over and brought to a different level that was more acceptable to him. She was a shinobi. These sorts of things happened. He knew what she meant, but preferred an alternate version of the truth.

“Maybe he can come around more often? Now that things are different.” Maybe this wasn’t really what he wanted, but it seemed like something that maybe she would want. He could tolerate Kaisaki at the least.

Love came in many shapes and sizes. It came in both words and actions. Love was by both bonds and blood. Kaisaki was a man filled to the brim with unconditional love. He was a man who cared deeply about certain people, and everyone they loved. He loved others as an extension of them. If Rei loved her son, then he loved him too. But he wore so many masks, both literally and metaphorically. Brutal honesty and misguided words spoken entirely from his single emotion; Love.

"You don't have to kill the other students, I would highly advise otherwise." she would tell him, "But that doesn't mean they won't give to the same. Besides, it would be a difficult thing if you killed my own students." Students was a strange word to say. As if to confirm that she cared for others than her son, perhaps the same or better. But in truth, she didn't love them, not like she loved her own kin.

"Kai isn't allowed around the house, not for as long as your father still lives." she would say, a weird wording of it. "We always keep our word, even when others don't. I owe your father that much, for now at least."

He lived and breathed, for now at least.

    For now.

“I wasn’t planning on trying to kill anyone…” The response would come with a bit of an awkward smile attached to it. He didn’t want to think about it, but it must have just been normal for her. He hadn’t even thought of that. The potential that he even could kill someone during this event had slipped his mind entirely. Even after she had said that. Hurting people, much less killing them, seemed like some dream. Something that still happened to other people instead of himself, or the people around him. This would have to change in time, likely rapidly and painfully, but for now he was still innocent.

“You have students?” The idea was strange. He would brush past that first topic again to move on to the next one, hoping that he would continue to not have to think about death. The same was true with what was said about Kai and his father. It was best not to think about these things. He didn’t want to imagine his father, or think about what the consequences would be. Things were already changing so fast. Just weeks ago he wouldn’t have been able to imagine sitting down like this and talking to his mother. Another layer onto the pie could just collapse everything, and then he would be worse off than when he started.

“Are any of them competing? Maybe I might know some of them.”
He didn’t know what he would say or do if he did know them. Leave them alone? Go easy on them? Be afraid of them? Maybe not give the same reverence that he did to her, but if they were trained by her then surely that meant something.

No one ever really plans to kill someone during their exams. Some go in thinking its like any other test. Some begin to realize it when other students from other villages start to show up, others don't learn until blood is drawn. Apologies aren't said on the battlefield. Shinobi are tools. Tools break. Some early on, some not until after generations have passed. Some stay sharp forever, while others dull after every battle. Some, remain dull, making their bluntness their own strength. She did not fear for her son, but it did not mean she was not concerned.

"They are, and you will." She would say, pausing to look over the food, carefully picking her next prey. "Though, I won't tell you whom they are, as they do not know whom you are." She reached over, a bun just out of reach until the white haired maid ran over to move the plate. Rather than hand it to Rei, she just moved it so she could reach it. She knew better than to touch the woman's food. She took the bun, nodded to the woman and she went back to the doorway to wait.

"Don't get me wrong, you're my son. You always will be. But I never announce my ties to family." She would say, reaching to the strawberry syrup, playing the gravy boat next to her plate. She poked a finger in the top of the bun, looking over at Chigetsu. "Those that know, already know. Those that don't, don't need to." She picked up the syrup, pouring it inside of the bun, then putting it back where it was among the other treats. "It's happened once, it will happen again..." She muttered to herself, lifting the bun to her mouth.

"You make sure, no matter what, you make it back home. Whatever your definition of home is." Home was where she slept. Home was where she was at peace. She had many places she could call home. But only one place felt like home. It wasn't the house they lived in. It wasn't going to be the same for her husband, nor her own boy. Home was were she could be, without rules and concepts of living. Home.

Home for her, was a small room with holes in the ceiling. Home was a cold damp bed. Home smelled of rotting flesh and blood. Home was sleeping on the floor so he could rest. Home, was beside the one she called her brother. Home was with Kaisaki.

Whatever your definition of home was.

He thought back to his apartment for a moment. It was nice, with the sort of luxury that the Hozuki Clan was known for. Big. Multiple rooms. More space than he could ever need. A kitchen that was rarely used, furniture and chairs that had never been sat in, a great view of the city that was always kept obscured by closed blinders. The Hozuki Clan was wealthy enough that even someone like him, having been kicked out, could still live somewhere nice on his own. It didn’t cost him anything, being his birthright as a member of the Hozuki despite how much of an embarrassment he was to them. Even with just the monthly stipend that the Hozuki granted and nothing else he was able to live a comfortable life. It wasn’t until recently that he had known that studio apartments even existed. That apartment was where he had spent the majority of the last few years, but more specifically a single room had been it, where Chigetsu had retreated into being a hikikomori. He could visualize it pretty clearly. A messy bed, with stuffed animals strewn about all over it. Dirty clothing thrown into piles on the floor, intermixed with candy wrappers and other refuse. Snacks and candy stored in boxes and stacked high in one of the room’s corners. His bedroom was one of the few signs of human activity there was.

    Was this home?

“I’ll come home.” He said it, nodding again. It wasn’t the first time he said it today, but at the same time he was beginning to realize it was just something he was saying. Still, he would keep on saying it. There was no alternative. “Where else would I go after I come back?”

His plate was empty now. He had finished what he put on it earlier, and it was left with just crumbs. Chi made no movement to fill it with something else. This was enough for him right now, and he would just watch his mother’s movements as she continued eating.

“I’ve been training lately.” He would say it idly. Not just to her, but more to himself. “Preparing for whatever could happen. I got a sword… It was a gift.” That was a long time ago. It was still slung up with the baldric over his bed, hanging like some sort of trophy. “Hana was teaching me some taijutsu too a while ago, but I’m not sure if I’m any good at it yet. Maybe with some practice I’ll be better.” He didn’t know why he was saying this. “That was a while ago, but I’m remembering it now.”

She didn't say that he would come home, only that he would go home. Everyone had their definition. Sometimes it was the place where years of your youth was spent trying to earn love and attention from your parents. A place full of failed training and suffering at the end of a open hand or some stick that you got rather antiquated with. Sometimes it was your own single bedroom apartment where you filled it with things that made you happy and filled you with joy. A place to call your own after years of living elsewhere. Sometimes home was a big house full of silence and sour tasting memories, where your husband lays in bed, drinking himself to death, no matter how much time you take to try to save his insides from imploding, he won't change. He wasn't one to change. A bedroom full of failed paths and dead ends. A home where instead of sleeping next to him, she found comfort in any other room of the house. A home, still, where you had someone and things you actually loved. Yet, felt so alone.

"Somewhere you feel loved." The words came out almost instinctive, as if it sat on the end of her tongue like a diver on the end of their board waiting to take a leap. A fall they chose to make as they descended into the water below, trying not to make a splash. An art stuck in making major and flashy movements, yet did everything to minimize a splash. Her words laced with venom and hidden stories, but fell from her lips trying to not disturb the world. Words meant to be ignored and brushed over. Words meant to fall upon deaf ears.

She reached out, only to slide an entire plate of cake towards her. The small decorative cloth under keeping the table clean and unscathed, but also left little to no sound as it was moved.

"Good." was all he could say. Her fingers dancing around the rim of the plate, but not yet meeting with the treat. She just couldn't eat with that still in mind. "I'm glad we live in a time where the Mizukage is both so involved in our lives, and cares greatly about her people." She landed her fingers on the cake, taking up a slice, only to take it just off the plate, but not to her lips.

    Right, the Mizukage.

Her, and her many presents of just... swords...
