The Assessment with Ren could have went better Maverick was embarrassed at his lack of skills. The next day he made his way out into the forest. The sun had not yet broke the horizon when he left his home that morning. The burning orb hung high in the noon sky by the time he found a spot he felt secluded enough. Setting his bag upon the ground he unlatched the pack pulling a ceramic dummy from within. After tying a cord of nylon around the doll he tossed the other end over a branch of the nearest tree hoisting it up into the air.

Stepping back about fifteen paces the young Uchiha focused his chakra working to kneed it into the desired combination. Rat → Tiger → Dog → Ox → Rabbit → Tiger His fingers worked fast but precise. as he exhaled multiple small orbs of flame. Maverick watched as they raced in the direction of the hanging target. As the first few orbs collided with the dummy Maverick jumped in celebration his eyes closed as he heard the thuds of fire on ceramic.

Darkness fading into dull colors, noises flooding his senses. Where was he? "Maverick to the rear! Maes get to the left flank of the carts!" What? Riza? His vision cleared focusing on the figure before him. It was Riza Inuzuka the woman he loved but she was different younger. His head swiveled from left to right, he knew this place. Fires raged down the line of trading carts, people were running and screaming. Men tried to put out the fires with their buckets a few with Jutsu. Riza ran into the smoke he faithful dog followed behind.

"Mav get to the rear they need you there!" It couldn't be Maes? He was dead he had watching him die in his own arms. Maes died during, his thoughts shattered, here Maes died here. This wasn't right this couldn't be how was he living this day again. His breath caught in his throat this wasn't real. He formed the seal of the Tiger "Release!" In an instant it was silence until he hear the song of a single bird. His vision now on the real world focused onto his father. The older man smiled his eyes red with the three tomoe Sharingan. "I am proud of you son, lets go home and rest."

Maverick sat alone in the shade of a tall tree somewhere deep in the forest outside of Konoha. After the training with his father the previous day in Genjutsu release he needed a slower pace today. He had been told of a simple technique, a single hand sign, molded with a skill the user was preforming at the time. If he would make his flames stronger by using just a little more chakra it was worth it. The Great Fireball technique was first Snake → Ram → Monkey → Boar → Horse → Tiger after weaving the needed signs he added Snake. The giant ball of flames erupted from his lips and instantly he could see the difference in size and heat radiating from the sphere. He spent the rest of the day practicing his fire skills adding the Snake seal to increase their power. As the sun began to set Maverick packed up feeling the drain on his chakra with exhaustion starting to set in. Maverick made his way home proud in the advancements he had made in the past few days.

The wind roared across the open plain blowing Maverick's hair wildly about. He relaxed closing his eyes looking to the clear skies above. The sun licked his skin as he bathed in the heat of the summer day. Reaching down he unhooked the latch on his pack pulling out a scroll of wind techniques gifted to him by a member of his clan. The birds chirped overhead as he sat back to a tree he reached out grabbing not a scroll but a book. It was a book of science he had checkout from the public library, its focus was chemical and molecular reactions.

Maverick closed the book and set it on the grass beside him before rising to his feet. He wasn't a fool he knew fire needed oxygen to breath and form. However while reading he had a thought, what if he used his Fuuton chakra to to mold his Katon chakra. He would attempt to control how much oxygen his Flame techniques would receive before they ever left his body. Knowing the Focused Amplification technique he used those basics to knead the two elements together. He could feel the heat growing within his body the power of the flames growing stronger. Making the sign of the Snake seal followed by the seals for the Great Fireball technique he exhaled.

The roar of the flames was deafening as the sphere of fire formed before him. It was almost blinding as he had to squint his eyes before the new power he had forged. As the flames died down he took a deep breath pleased with the secret he had unlocked for himself. He returned to his pack picking up the book and placing it inside. Oxygen Manipulation that is what he would call his new Technique.

Custom Jutsu Learned:

After creating the Oxygen Manipulation technique Maverick seemed pleased with himself. However he knew that to become stronger and be a pillar for the Uchiha he had to refine more than just his Katon techniques. Reaching down he grabbed one of the few scrolls that he had brought along with him. As he unraveled the parchment letting his eyes float over the words and diagrams for this new jutsu. Fuuton Release: Gale Palm it seemed to have a few different applications. The first being that of a force of wind strong enough to topple a normal human. Preforming the required seals he spent the better part of an hour practicing on nearby bushes and trees.

Satisfied with the progress he had made with the expelling gusts of wind Maverick began to focus on the other more practical application. He focused himself and made the seals activating the jutsu. He took a step forward instantly feeling the increased speed the jutsu provided. A small root caught his foot tripping him as he tumbled end over end. Shaking his head to regain his senses he brushed himself off and tried again. After a few hours Maverick was speeding around the clearing. Dodging trees, ducking branches and jumping bushes. He slowed and stopped in the middle of the clearing catching his breath. it would take time to get used to seeing at that speed but at least he had the Sharingan to help ease that process.

As the sun started to slowly fall in the sky signaling to Maverick it was getting late. He set his water skin onto the ground replacing it with the last scroll he would try and learn today. As he looked over the technique he would soon try he thought back to his Assessment with Ren. He had learned a lot that day more than he had in his eleven years of being a Genin. Excitement took hold of him like a splash of cold water. He couldn't wait to show his Sensei the new techniques he had been learning. He knew they next time they met it would be to go out on a mission. Setting the scroll down and gathering his thoughts back to the jutsu at hand he made the needed hand seals. He could feel it almost immediately, the slight space between the forest floor and his feet. Maverick took a tentative step forward testing the waters of this new technique. His foot slide forward almost as if sliding on ice. After a moment of catching his bearings and figuring how to shift his weight he was off. Skating through the forest Maverick almost felt free, like a bird in the sky.

The sun now just a small haze of orange on the horizon cast many shadows through the trees. Swiftly dashing between the trees Maverick skated home. He felt accomplished today, he had done more this week than he ever imagined. He was grateful for the fire his Sensei had lit inside him. A quiet hum escaped his lips on his way home mixing with the melody of the birds in the canopy.

It was the third day of Maverick's solo training. He had been tasked a few days ago to learn the simple jutsu he lacked. He had trained hard and had even developed a brand new jutsu. Today he was out working on a derivative of the Clone technique he learned at the academy. Dog → Tiger in a puff of smoke a clone of himself stood before him. Maverick reached out his hand passing through the clone feeling as if he had walked through a thick mist. Step one was complete now he needed to try making more, poof, two more clones appeared next to him. They moved like him however they did not speak and could not use jutsu. These clones were more for distraction than offense. Maverick would use them to try and confuse an opponent as he took to a vantage point before raining down literal hell fire. He could see uses for these but knew that anyone with a Sharingan or Byakugan would see right through them. He would choose the right time to use this skill so it did not become a waste of time or chakra.

Maverick's tinkering with Fuuton jutsu to increase his movement speed had intrigued him enough he figured why not learn the original? The Body Flicker Technique was just a low rank jutsu that any genin could learn and put to use. However there have been some who took the training and usage of this jutsu to it's peak. He had heard of an Uchiha in the past who had become known as the "God of the Body Flicker". Maverick had no need to become the "God" of anything unless it was his fire jutsu. He did like the idea of not being hit at least as easily. He made the Half Tiger seal and moved his legs. He knew the limitations, no turns, do not stop. In a straight line across the open field he sprinted watching the world blur past him. For the next hour he ran back and forth across the clearing until he felt comfortable with the control. It was time for a break he was exhausted from running so much. Maverick made his way to his pack sitting beside it before opening his lunch and enjoying the meal before him.

It had been a few hours since Maverick had sat down for his lunch. A calm breeze blew through the air kicking up some loose dirt. As the dust floated in the air caught by the breeze it made its way past the nose of the sleeping Uchiha. With an involuntary sneeze Maverick awoke from his nap. It had become late afternoon but not quite dusk making the shadows on the edge of the clearing grow long. It was the perfect time for day for the last jutsu Maverick wanted to try and learn. Making his way towards the trees he thought back on the day and the progress he had made. It was not enough he need more, to be better, stronger, more powerful than he was. He needed to break the mental limits he had put upon himself.

Standing beneath the forest canopy the shadows danced across his body as the wind blew through the tree tops. "The Tiger seal huh? Should be able to mold into the shadows. Ha like a real ninja." He focused and formed the seal with his fingers. It took a moment before he realized where his feet used to be were two black mounds with black tendrils reaching up his legs. Maybe its like swimming he thought. He relaxed and let himself be taken by the shadow with a feeling of falling. He imagined the tree that was across from where he stood before. As his eyes opened his emerged from the shadow at the base of the thick truck. Now this could be useful indeed he thought before stepping from the shadows to return home.

It was the fourth day of Maverick's solo training. Ren had requested, no he more or less told him, that he try and learn techniques in which Ren could not teach him. Maverick was surprised when Ren had told him of his lack of Fuuton knowledge he figure the young man knew everything. Over the course of the past three days his array of wind techniques had expanded. He had even learned a few jutsu he probably already should have. He had found a serene area this morning for his training, a nice small pond whos water source looked to be an opening in the cliff face thirty meters above. This time he had memorized the scrolls instead of bringing them along.

On this mornings agenda was the Wind Release: Breakthrough technique. He had heard of the Great Breakthrough but not this one until he had really looked into some older Jutsus. Dog - Horse - Bird his fingers formed the seals as his chakra gathered in his stomach. He inhaled filling his lungs before releasing a violent gust of wind before him. He cocked his head to the side, the wind seemed powerful enough to at least knock a man off his feet. He however figured it would be a tad stronger considering the force of the blast.

After practicing the Wind Release: Breakthrough technique for about an hour or so Maverick felt he had a good handle on it. It was time to practice a technique he had found that could be quite fun and useful in most situations. Taking a generous gulp of water before replacing the cap back on the water skin he smiled. The Gentle Step technique was definitely one that he had never heard of before. The application was as simple as standing on water or walking up the side of a tree. The caveat being the user needed to be of the Wind release nature. Why one might ask? To be able to walk in the sky.

Calming his emotions and excitement Maverick focused his chakra to the soles of his feet. There were rules to this technique if he stopped moving it would release. He was not able to travel higher than fifty meters at a time. He would not make the mistake of going to high. He was happy staying a few feet off the ground at most. He took the first step up feeling resistance against his feet. His next step found him off the ground and he was off. His focus solely on the chakra formed at his feet keeping with right mixture of Fuuton chakra. After a moment the chakra released as he found himself tumbling onto the forest floor. He had forgotten how long the Jutsu lasted and lost track of time. Dusting himself off he would try again practice made perfect.

As the day wore on Maverick found himself lost the ripples of the pond before him. The tranquil sounds of water splashing calmed him more than he expected. It had been a few hours since he had begun practicing the Gentle Step technique. The feeling of walking on air was filled with different emotions he had never experienced. Freedom was the feeling he felt most strongly being a few feet off the air almost felt like flying. However he knew to utilize this technique to its fullest he would need to be higher in the air. This came at a great risk of falling from great heights as well. He had found the remedy for this drawback in the Gentle Decent technique. If he somehow fell and was not able to correct the mistake he could cushion his fall with blast of wind.

Taking a deep breathe Maverick used the Gentle Step to run fifty meters into the air before stopping. As the jutsu released and he started to fall his mind panicked forgetting the seal for Gentle Decent. He could die from a fall of this height and he knew that. At the last second he formed the Bird seal, he was to close to fully stop. To his right he shot the gust of air forcing himself over the pond. He skipped across the surface once before submerging below the water. Coming up he took a deep breath that was to close, why did he panic? He was frustrated with himself now. As he climbed from the pool he spent the rest of the day making sure he was focused and ready. It wasn't his time to die out here training simple jutsu.

It had almost been a week since Maverick had started focusing on his training. He had taken great leaps in learning Fuuton techniques he had not known before. A few of his favorite were the ones that increased his movement speed to zip around the battlefield. Today he decided it was best to learn a few more offensive techniques to use in battle. The area he had found today consisted of handfuls of small trees dotting the immediate area. Up first on todays agenda was Wind Release: Slash. He was under the understanding that the jutsu worked by making multiple blades of air wind before combining to one larger blade. Maverick did not need to make hand seals for this technique just focus his Fuuton chakra into manifestation. After his training with Ren he had gotten a better control of his handling of ninjutsu. The blades formed easily for him today with hardly and effort. For the next half hour Maverick cut down a handful of small trees as he practiced this jutsu.

Jutsu Learned:

Branches and parts of small trees lay of the forest floor all around him. He had been pleased with the ease he learned this last jutsu. He stretched his arms before turning his head to each side hearing a satisfying crack. Yesterday he had learned the Breakthrough technique he felt the only natural progression would be to learn the Great Breakthrough technique. As he formed the seals Tiger → Ox → Dog → Rabbit → Snake he exhaled as a torrential gust of wind escaped his mouth. The larger trees groaned and creaked around him. Their branches swayed heavily as the smaller bushes around their bases uprooted flying meters away. He needed to be careful that he did not cause to much damage to the forest around him. He practiced for a few more minutes aiming a few of the blasts at the ground causing massive gouges in the forest floor. That was enough of that for today, he had enough time to practice one more jutsu before he had to get on his way to run a few errands for his parents.

Jutsu Learned:

Before Maverick left the forest for the day to run his errands he had decided on the exact jutsu he wanted to practice. Reaching into his bag he pulled out a few shuriken and set them on the ground. Reaching out he touched each one transferring a bit of his chakra to each. As he stood up and stepped back he activated his chakra in each of the metal blades. Focusing as hard as he could he watched them rise before him. Great the first step was complete now it was a slightly more challenging step. His training with Ren would pay off as he used the secrets of the Flame Whirlwind technique to his advantage. The shuriken began to rotate around him each looking as if they were spinning on an invisible wire. He took a step forward making sure to move the shuriken with himself. He did not want to chance walking into one of the spinning blades. Another step, then another before he picked up his pace. He had decided for this test he would keep them rotating around him as he made his way back to the village.

Maverick decided not to train today in the forest but instead in his own back yard at home. He did not plan to practice any volatile jutsu or any that would cause any real destruction. He had not even changed out of his sleep pants and stood alone barefoot and shirtless in the morning sun. The first technique was called Claw Creation Technique. It would elongate and sharpen his nails to the point he was able to defend from even swords. It was more useful to someone who had better taijutsu capabilities than Maverick. Honestly he was just average if anything, up close combat was never his choice. He figured however if he would be taking on missions alone he needed some defense.

Utilizing the jutsu was not hard, it was as simple as focusing ones chakra to their nails. He watched his nails grow and sharpen almost to tiny blades. He had placed a few straw dummies around the yard strapped to small posts. His mother said if he ruined he yard she would kill him. He feared her more than any enemy. For the next few hours he swiped, jabbed and clawed at the dummies. He knew he looked like a fool but did not mind the slight embarrassment. He had decided it was enough practice, he could only cut up straw so much.

Jutsu Learned:

He reached over grabbing a small towel bringing it up to his forehead before wiping away the sweat. Maverick stood up from the chair he had sat in during his break and walked back inside his house. He returned a few moments later with some wire and cord. The next technique he wanted to try was one he was sure he had tried before as a younger shinobi. All he could remember was failing and giving up. He huffed at the thought of his past self, content to staying a Genin never caring when they failed the Chunin exams. Maverick attached the wires to a few shuriken and tossed them with a flick of his wrist. He watched the fly through the air circling around one of the targets. He snapped his wrist, tightening his fingers around the other ends of the cords. Quickly he snatched the strings with his teeth and formed the seals needed. Snake → Dragon → Rabbit → Tiger, flames shot from his mouth and raced down the wires encircling the straw dummy. Maverick dropped the ends he had clenched in his teeth letting the fire burn. He would need the flames for the next jutsu he wished to learn.

Jutsu Learned:

"Maverick what in the hell are you doing to my backyard?' He flinched hearing his mothers voice as she shouted at him through the kitchen window. He turned pleading his case to her before she made up her mind on the subject. After calming his mothers rage he returned to the back yard. The fire had died down a little but was still there burning away at the straw dummy. He did not need much for this jutsu to work. He formed the Tiger seal and focused his chakra into the dwindling flames. He waited for a few second but nothing happened. He was not sure what he had done wrong for the justu to not work. He figured his mother had gotten under his skin and made him lose focus. He formed the Tiger seal again and focused waiting for a result. The fire popped before bursting out decimating the small pole the straw dummy was tied to. He knew he just needed to keep focus. "What the FUCK Maverick!"

Today was a special day for Maverick. He had been training hard all week by himself which in turn raised his confidence to a level he did not know he had. He had asked Riza out on a date into Konoha later this evening. His excitement and nervousness were boiling over to a fever pitch. He had decided to blow off some steam by training a few new jutsu he had made. He had not walked to far into the forest today, he did not want to be late meeting up with Riza. For the first technique of the day he figured he would practice his Wind Clone jutsu.

Maverick had made this jutsu after learning the Ember Clone from Ren. He had never before thought about mixing his elemental chakra with that of the clone jutsu. After asking around his clan he had come to the realization that even though there were many different elemental releases no one had created a wind clone. Making the Bird seal Maverick focused his Fuuton chakra into the clone skill. As the wind swirled around him he watched the gusts start to form a mirror image of himself. His satisfaction was short lived as the clone quickly dispersed into thin air. Maverick should have known it would not be easy even if it was his creation.
